Analysis

Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) remains the longest at up to 3 years, but November 2024 changes introduced field-of-study restrictions mapping to occupations on a long-term-shortage list, plus mandatory CLB/NCLC language testing for most applicants.

Australia's subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa is 2 to 4 years depending on qualification level and regional study location. It flows naturally into subclass 189/190 points-tested PR routes.

The UK Graduate route (successor to Tier 1 Post-Study Work) is 2 years (3 for PhD), open-labour-market, no sponsor needed. March 2024 changes kept it open but tightened the Skilled Worker transition threshold.

Ireland's Stamp 1G (Third Level Graduate Scheme) gives up to 24 months of unrestricted work after Level 8+ awards. Transition to Critical Skills Employment Permit gives a fast track to Stamp 4 settlement.

Netherlands Orientation Year (Zoekjaar) is 1 year but comes with a reduced Kennismigrant salary threshold on transition — the most valuable single feature of any EU graduate route.

Frequently asked questions

Which country has the best post-study work visa?+−

For duration, Canada PGWP at 3 years. For ease of PR transition, Canada CEC or Australia subclass 189 after subclass 485. For unrestricted work rights, UK Graduate route. For lowest transition threshold to skilled work, Netherlands Orientation Year.

Do post-study work visas lead to permanent residence?+−

Most do indirectly. Canada PGWP time counts toward CEC eligibility. Australia subclass 485 is a standard PR bridge. UK Graduate is a bridge to Skilled Worker. Ireland Stamp 1G transitions to Critical Skills permit and Stamp 4. NL Orientation Year transitions to Kennismigrant.

Can I switch employers during a post-study work visa?+−

Yes — all the routes above have open labour-market conditions. You can change employers at will, combine part-time and contract work, and pursue self-employment. This distinguishes them from sponsored work visas.
