D7 visa (passive income / retirement) for South African citizens

By Sam Parks · Last reviewed: 30 July 2026

Residence visa for non-EU retirees and other applicants who can live from stable income of their own.

No sponsorship requiredLeads to permanent residencyResidence visa valid for the entry/residence process; temporary residence generally 2 years then a 3-year renewal. Permanent residence may be available after 5 years; naturalisation generally requires 7 years of legal residence for eligible EU/CPLP nationals and 10 years for other foreign nationals.

This page covers the D7 visa (passive income / retirement) specifically for South African applicants — including document requirements, consular procedures, and common issues specific to South Africa. The route's general criteria are summarised below, but the current corridor-specific filing, visa-issuance, and entry position above can still determine whether the route is usable.

What South African applicants should know

South African D7 applicants are a smaller but established retiree cohort — predominantly Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria-based pension and rental-income holders looking for EU-residency stability and ZAR-hedge currency exposure. Three items dominate the South African D7 case. SARS treats cessation of tax residency as a deemed disposal of worldwide assets at market value on the cessation date — the resulting capital gains tax (CGT exit charge) is the single largest financial planning item and frequently dictates whether D7 timing makes sense. SARB exchange control limits the annual outward capital allowance (foreign investment allowance plus single discretionary allowance) — pension lump sums and property-sale proceeds above the combined annual limit need AIT (approval to invest abroad) clearance through an authorised dealer bank. Section 9C of the Income Tax Act treats long-held South African shares as capital rather than revenue once held >3 years, which interacts with the cessation deemed-disposal regime. The South African Reserve Bank apostille route via DIRCO covers the D7 documentation chain.

Visa overview

Portugal's D7 is the commonly used name for the residence-visa route for retirees and people living from income of their own. Applicants must prove the source, amount and availability in Portugal of qualifying income, together with accommodation, insurance and criminal-record evidence. The entry visa leads to an AIMA residence-permit application; temporary residence is generally issued for two years and renewed for three. Permanent residence may be available after five years. Citizenship now has a separate, longer residence clock: under the law effective from 19 May 2026, eligible EU and CPLP nationals generally need seven years of legal residence, while other foreign nationals generally need ten years and must meet the other naturalisation conditions.
