Moving to Afghanistan: feasibility and safety limits
FCDO advises against all travel to Afghanistan, including organised tours, because of extreme security, detention and kidnapping risks and severely limited assistance. There is no British embassy, and entry permission should not be treated as an ordinary residence route.

Do not undertake a voluntary move
Travel throughout Afghanistan is extremely dangerous, borders can close and foreign nationals face heightened detention and kidnapping risk. In-person UK consular assistance is not available.
Postpone voluntary relocation. Essential organisations should use their own professional security, extraction and legal systems rather than an individual move checklist.
Do not equate a visa with protection or residence
A visa is required, but the Afghan embassy in London is closed and recognition and issuing channels are unstable. Afghan-origin and authority-check records do not create an ordinary work or residence pathway.
Obtain written confirmation from the de facto authorities and the sponsoring organisation, independent legal advice and a verified exit route before any travel.

Use institutional security and reversible arrangements
Do not take independent housing, road travel or cash-transfer risks. Essential employers should provide secure accommodation, movement protocols, communications and evacuation.
Banking restrictions and cash rules can prevent access to funds; use only lawful, audited arrangements and never informal sanctions evasion.
Do not move dependants on an ordinary plan
Healthcare and evacuation are severely constrained. Insurance may be invalid against FCDO advice and women face extensive restrictions on movement, work and public life.
A family move requires specialist security and human-rights assessment; school, work and healthcare cannot be assumed available.
Maintain documents and immediate departure capacity
Keep passport, visa, sponsor evidence, communications and multiple exit options live. Some border crossings are closed and conditions change without warning.
Monitor advice continuously and leave early if the sponsor, security or route fails. Do not expect consular extraction.
