Moving to Azerbaijan: a practical relocation guide

Azerbaijan normally requires both a valid residence ground and, for paid local employment, a work permit. Registration at the place of stay has a short deadline, and current land-border and Armenia-border restrictions materially affect arrival planning.

Pair residence with the actual activity

Temporary residence is available only on grounds listed in the Migration Code, including qualifying close family, investment or property, business leadership, study and paid work with a work permit. A residence card permits temporary residence and re-entry during validity, but does not by itself authorise every job.

For paid employment, coordinate the employer's work-permit process with temporary residence. The application for temporary residence must be made at least 30 days before the current temporary stay or residence expires.

Register the place of stay on time

A foreigner staying more than 15 days must normally be registered at the place of stay; Kazakhstan citizens have a 30-day threshold. The host or accommodation provider can file electronically, by email, in person at a migration office or through ASAN service.

Obtain proof that the filing succeeded. A hotel registration and a residence-permit address are related records but should not be assumed interchangeable after a move.

Make housing support the permit file

Temporary-residence documents include passport evidence, the legal ground and residential evidence. The passport must extend beyond the requested permit period under the official checklist. Ask the landlord to provide the required title, lease or consent material before paying a long deposit.

Keep original civil records and certified copies available for dependants. Confirm notarisation and translation with the State Migration Service because requirements differ by ground.

Verify payroll, tax and healthcare separately

Do not start local paid work until both the work and residence position permit it. Obtain employer evidence of the approved role and payroll registration. A change of employer can change the work-permit basis.

Tax residence, social insurance and medical access are separate from the migration card. Obtain the taxpayer identifier and compulsory-insurance position from the competent bodies, keep a day count and maintain private cover until entitlement is confirmed.

Plan family, school, banking and driving

Each dependant needs their own residence file. Give the school prior reports, identity and translated records and ask the local education authority to decide placement rather than assuming age alone controls it.

Banks apply their own identity, address, tax-residence and source-of-funds checks. Driving-licence recognition depends on the issuing state; check with ASAN or the traffic police before driving or importing a vehicle.

Plan around border restrictions and expiry

Current UK advice warns against travel within five kilometres of the Armenia border and notes mine risks in parts of the southwest. International land-border restrictions mean air entry may be the practical route; recheck immediately before travel.

Start extensions well before the 30-day pre-expiry filing point. Reconfirm the work permit, address, passport and family evidence and do not assume a pending filing authorises continued employment.
