Moving to Bangladesh: a practical relocation guide
Bangladesh employment entry is supported by the employer and an appropriate government, BIDA or zone recommendation. The initial visa and the post-entry work/residence extension are connected but not interchangeable.

Build the employer and authority chain
The Bangladesh mission lists employment visas for appointed experts and employees and requires an employer letter, appointment and contract, plus a recommendation from the competent ministry, BIDA or economic-zone authority.
Investor and business visas serve different activities; neither substitutes for an employment visa and work permit.
| Plan | Route to examine | Dependency |
|---|---|---|
| Employment | Work permit/Employment Visa | Employer contract and competent-authority recommendation. |
| Investment | Investor Visa | BIDA or zone registration; confirm any operational role separately. |
| Study | Student Visa | Recognised institution and separate work check. |
Complete the post-entry permission and address process
The mission says the initial employment visa can be extended by the Department of Immigration and Passports in Bangladesh. Confirm the employer-led work permit and extension process immediately after arrival.
Keep entry, employer, BIDA or zone, lease and application receipts together and ask the sponsor whether police or foreigner registration applies.
Do not work before the full approval is live
Confirm the exact date and employer for lawful work. A visa sticker, pending BIDA filing or business visit is not enough for ordinary employment.
Verify ownership or authority to rent, flood and utility resilience, and address documentation before a long deposit.
Set up e-TIN, payroll and medical cover
Obtain an e-TIN and ask payroll about withholding and social obligations. Tax residence and foreign income need separate advice.
Medical capacity varies and air-quality, heat and water risks affect location choice. Arrange robust private cover and evacuation where appropriate.
Document dependants, school and banking
Each family member needs the correct entry and extension status. Bring authenticated civil, school and vaccination records.
Ask schools about placement and transport. Banks apply passport, visa, address, tax and source-of-funds checks; foreign-exchange rules affect transfers.
Renew through the sponsor and monitor security
Start the visa and work-permit extension well before expiry with current contract and authority recommendation. Report job or address changes.
Monitor political demonstrations and regional advice, and check foreign-licence recognition before driving.
