Moving to Bhutan: a practical relocation guide

Bhutan is not an open retirement or nomad destination. A government-approved employer, institution or qualifying family basis drives the visa and permit; tourist e-Visa status does not convert into ordinary work permission.

Begin with a Bhutanese sponsor

The Immigration Rules distinguish business, work, student, dependant and residence permissions. A tourist e-Visa and Sustainable Development Fee arrangement is for visiting, not local employment or settlement.

The employer obtains labour approval and the work permit; a dependant needs a separate permit and should confirm work rights independently.

Follow entry, immigration and local reporting instructions

Travel only with the approved visa or entry clearance and carry the sponsor documents. Complete biometrics, permit collection and any local reporting directed by Immigration.

Use the actual address supplied by the employer or institution and report a move rather than assuming a tenancy changes the immigration record.

Keep work and housing sponsor-aligned

Do not start work before the labour and immigration permissions are active, and do not change employer or location informally.

Housing can be employer-linked and supply is limited outside Thimphu. Record utilities, household eligibility and end-of-employment move-out terms.

Confirm medical and tax coverage

Ask the employer what healthcare foreigners can access and arrange private and evacuation cover, especially outside the main centres.

Register with the Department of Revenue and Customs where required and seek advice for foreign income; immigration residence is not tax residence.

Plan dependants, school, bank and driving

Each dependant needs their own permit and civil records. Ask the intended school about capacity, curriculum, placement and immigration documentation.

Banks require permit, address, tax and source-of-funds evidence. Driving permits and vehicle import are separate and should be checked with the Road Safety and Transport Authority.

Renew only while the sponsor basis continues

Calendar the visa, work or dependant permit and passport. Have the sponsor start renewal before expiry and formally update job, school, family or address changes.

Permanent residence is exceptional and governed by the official rules; do not infer a settlement path from repeated work permits.
