Moving to Cyprus: Republic relocation guide

This guide covers Republic-administered areas; northern residence, services and property processes are not interchangeable.

Fix jurisdiction and status

The Republic does not exercise effective control in the north. Confirm jurisdiction before relying on a permit, service or title. EU long stays require registration; other nationals need the correct work, remote-work or non-working basis.

Employment is employer-linked. Digital Nomad status covers qualifying foreign activity, while visitor residence prohibits economic activity.

Complete separate local registrations

Verify the landlord, written lease, title context, inventory, utilities and address evidence. Banks separately check identity, tax residence and funds.

Residence does not automatically enrol someone in GESY. Complete employer social insurance and tax registration where applicable, keep interim cover, and assess cross-border tax from actual facts. Schools, licence exchange, vehicle import and pet entry each have separate evidence.

Keep employment permission distinct

Employer-supported entry and the residence-and-employment permit are linked but separate. Do not start or change local work until the employer and category are authorised.

Keep contract, payroll and contribution records. Regulated professions can require recognition beyond immigration, and digital-nomad or visitor status does not authorise local employment.

Confirm healthcare category and start date

GESY requires ordinary residence in Republic-controlled areas and an eligible beneficiary category. For EU citizens, the published categories include qualifying work or permanent residence. For non-EU citizens, they include permanent residence or equal-treatment rights in social insurance. A temporary residence card alone is insufficient; dependants must meet their own conditions.

Keep route-required private cover until access is confirmed. Bring clinical and prescription records and identify interim primary and emergency care.

Prepare family, school and banking evidence

Ask schools about district, placement, language support, translated records and vaccination evidence. A family permit may follow the main permit without granting work rights.

Banks independently check identity, Republic address, tax residence and source of funds. Use consistent transliterations across residence, lease, school and bank records.

Plan licences, vehicles, pets and renewal

Licence exchange depends on issuer and residence. Vehicle import, registration and insurance are separate. Pet entry requires correct identification, vaccination and health documents.

Keep approvals and official receipts accessible. Track passport and permit expiry, renewal windows and employer, address or family changes that must be reported.

Build the Republic arrival chain in order

Carry passport, entry approval, employer or foreign-work evidence, insurance, civil records, certified translations and temporary address evidence. Complete the Aliens Register, residence application and biometrics that apply to the route, and retain receipts. Do not infer work authority from entry or an appointment.

After obtaining stable address evidence, align employer, social-insurance, tax, GESY, banking, utilities and school records. Keep another payment route during bank checks. Before taking a Cyprus client, changing employer or moving north, reassess residence, labour and jurisdiction consequences.

Maintain a renewal-ready file

Keep lease and utility proof, receipts, insurance, payroll or foreign-client records and certified family documents current. Remote workers should retain evidence activity remains abroad; employees need the authorised employer and contribution record.

Review every family member before renewal. Check passport validity, absences, address, school records and whether a partner’s work needs a new basis. Retain vehicle, customs and pet-health evidence.

Turn the approvals into a functioning household

Confirm which district office owns the residence file and preserve appointment, fee and biometric receipts. Give the employer the exact document required for payroll and social insurance and reconcile the first contribution record. Never assume that pending residence permission authorises a first working day.

At home, document meters, cooling equipment, water arrangements, communal charges and internet responsibility. Retain another payment method while bank checks complete. Identify healthcare, pharmacy and emergency arrangements and confirm school transport. Before taking a local client, buying property or moving north, reassess legal, tax and permit consequences.

  • Verify the authority office for the actual district.
  • Keep proof of application and lawful status accessible.
  • Match payroll identity to residence records.
  • Retain verified landlord and utility contacts.
  • Review foreign income before the first tax filing.
  • Record renewal owners for every family member.
