Separate entry, residence and work permission
Djibouti’s short tourism, business and transit eVisa does not authorise local work. A relocation needs the applicable traditional visa, work authorisation and foreigner identity documentation for the sponsor and purpose.
A visa waiver, visitor visa or business-visitor permission is not an open right to take employment or provide local services. Remote work also needs an immigration, labour and tax analysis unless the authority publishes a route that expressly covers it.
| Plan | VisaAtlas route | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Work authorisation | Work Authorization | Obtain labour approval for the named activity. |

Complete the arrival record
Have the employer coordinate the work authorisation and collect the identity-card requirements before travel. Verify entry point, sponsor, validity and any local medical or biometric appointment.
Inspect names, passport number, sponsor or purpose, permitted activity and expiry on every issued record. Keep the approval, receipt and a copy of the entry stamp outside the passport.
Make housing support the move
Djibouti City dominates services, while port, base and regional work may be remote. Inspect cooling, water, power, internet and employer transport and confirm heat and medical contingencies.
Verify landlord authority, lease language, deposit, inventory, utilities, internet and early-exit terms. Keep the real address and payment trail for immigration, banking and employer files.
Set up banking, payroll and tax evidence
Agree salary currency, allowances, banking access and tax responsibility in the contract. Preserve official transfers and do not use a business eVisa to justify consulting income.
Ask the bank and tax authority for their live identity, permit, address, tax-number and source-of-funds requirements. Immigration status alone does not determine tax residence: retain travel days, payslips, foreign income and business invoices.
Plan each family member and essential service
Dependants need individual status and evacuation-capable health cover; school choice may be limited by language and capacity. An accompanying adult needs work authorisation before employment.
A dependant, student or family residence document should not be treated as an adult work permit without confirmation. Carry legalised civil records, prescriptions, vaccination records and prior-school reports.
Control renewal, changes and current risk
The government publishes a separate work-authorisation renewal. Start before expiry and clear sponsor or role changes; check border and Red Sea travel advice before movement.
Read current official travel advice for Djibouti, the exact region and any overland route before travel. Confirm that insurance covers the location and planned work.
