Moving to Ecuador: permission and practical setup
Ecuador offers distinct work, professional, remote-work, pension, investment and family residence categories. The visa, foreign-resident identity card, tax record and health affiliation are separate decisions and should use identical civil data.

Select the residence basis that matches the income
Use dependent-work residence for a qualifying Ecuadorian employment relationship, professional residence for an eligible recognised qualification, and digital-nomad residence for qualifying remote activity. Pensioner, rentista, investor and family categories use different evidence.
Do not use a visitor admission, property purchase, tax number or company registration as a substitute for residence or local work permission. Confirm each adult’s activity and each dependant’s status before travel.
| Plan | Catalogue route | Evidence focus |
|---|---|---|
| Ecuadorian employment | Temporary Residence - Work (Relacion de Dependencia) | Employment and employer records |
| Professional basis | Temporary Residence - Professional (Profesional) | Qualification recognition or registration |
| Foreign remote work | Temporary Residence - Digital Nomad (Visa Nomada) | Foreign activity, income and insurance |
| Pension income | Temporary Residence - Pensioner (Jubilado) | Qualifying pension evidence |
Prepare visa and civil evidence together
Obtain passport, police, birth, marriage, custody, qualification, employment and income records required by the selected service. Check apostille or legalisation and Spanish translation before uploading; the official portal, rather than an intermediary’s list, controls the application.
Keep the electronic visa, payment and appointment evidence outside freight. Resolve spelling, surname and date discrepancies because the same data will feed the cédula, IESS, SRI, bank and school records.
Obtain the foreign-resident identity record
After the qualifying visa is issued, follow Registro Civil instructions for the cédula de identidad for foreign residents. Confirm whether visa registration or an order of cedulación is required for the exact category before attending.
Check the card immediately and correct errors through the proper authority. A cédula enables many practical processes but is not proof of tax residence, health affiliation or permission for an activity outside the visa conditions.
Choose the city, altitude and lease deliberately
Test altitude, climate, water, earthquake risk, security, internet, commute and access to healthcare before a long lease. Verify the owner or agent, inventory, deposit, utilities and notice terms and retain the signed contract and payment trail.
Ask authorities and banks which address proof they accept. Galápagos has separate movement and residence controls, so a mainland Ecuador visa should never be assumed to authorise ordinary settlement there.
Register only for the systems that apply
Employees should verify IESS affiliation and contributions through the employer. Foreign residents may also have a voluntary affiliation option if they meet its conditions. A visa and cédula do not prove active IESS healthcare access, so retain interim cover until affiliation is confirmed.
SRI tax duties depend on residence and economic activity. Obtain or update the RUC when required, keep travel and worldwide-income records, and take advice before billing foreign clients or changing a company structure.
Link family status, school and work correctly
Keep apostilled civil and custody records for family applications and check every person’s visa and cédula status. A spouse intending to work or trade must confirm that activity under the issued status and complete individual tax and social-security steps.
Ask the education authority or intended school about placement, address, vaccination and recognition of foreign academic records. Check language, commute and support needs before committing to housing.
Plan licence and pet procedures by jurisdiction
Driving-licence recognition and exchange depend on the issuing country and ANT process. Confirm the current rule before driving, and treat vehicle registration, insurance and import as separate matters.
Agrocalidad controls animal-entry health certification. Obtain the applicable permit or zoosanitary documentation and coordinate inspection and carrier rules. Track visa, cédula, tax, IESS and passport changes rather than relying on a single renewal date.
Your moving checklist
Tick off the tasks that apply to you. The timing is a planning order, not a substitute for the deadlines on your permission or an official instruction.
