Moving to El Salvador: permission and practical setup
Employment, investment, pension and independent-income residence use different evidence. A visitor stay, property purchase or company registration does not by itself authorise residence or local work.

Choose residence by the activity you will perform
DGME publishes separate temporary-residence procedures for employment and other qualifying purposes. Match the application to the actual employer, income or investment evidence; keep every family member lawful and do not begin local work on visitor admission.
| Plan | Route | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Local employment | Temporary Residence with Work Authorisation | Employer and work-residence evidence |
| Investment | Investor Temporary Residence | Qualifying investment evidence |
| Recurring income | Rentista Temporary Residence (Stable Foreign Income) | Independent-income basis |
| Retirement | Pensionado Temporary Residence (Retiree) | Pension basis |
Prepare authenticated records before travel
Use the live DGME checklist for passport, police, civil, employer and financial evidence. Confirm apostille or legalisation and Spanish translation before departure; keep originals and filing receipts available rather than in freight.
Complete migration and address steps in sequence
Preserve entry evidence, attend the instructed DGME appointment and collect the residence document through the official channel. Use the same legal name and address across immigration, lease, tax, social-security and bank files, and report changes where required.
Separate tax, social security and banking
Ask the employer to confirm ISSS and pension-system onboarding and reconcile the first payroll record. Register with the tax authority when the activity requires it; immigration approval does not determine foreign-income treatment. Banks make independent identity, address and source-of-funds checks.
Verify healthcare, school and dependant permissions
Confirm active ISSS, employer or private health access for every family member before cancelling interim cover. Ask the intended school for placement, immigration, address, vaccination and prior-school records, and confirm a partner’s work permission separately.
Resolve licences, imports and pets before commitments
Ask the transport authority how the issuing licence is treated before buying a vehicle. Obtain Customs classification before shipping household goods and Agriculture animal-health requirements before booking a pet; track residence and passport dates together.
