Moving to Eritrea: permission, arrival and practical setup
Eritrea’s consular entry visa does not by itself authorise employment or residence. The employer or host must obtain written work, residence, registration and travel-permit guidance; persons of Eritrean origin should also seek advice on status-specific obligations.

Eritrea’s consular entry visa does not by itself authorise employment or residence. The employer or host must obtain written work, residence, registration and travel-permit guidance; persons of Eritrean origin should also seek advice on status-specific obligations.
A visa waiver, visitor visa or business-visitor permission is not an open right to take employment or provide local services. Remote work also needs an immigration, labour and tax analysis unless the authority publishes a route that expressly covers it.

Complete the arrival record
Confirm sponsor reception, local registration, identity and any internal travel permits before arrival. Keep the passport and consular documents accessible and understand exit requirements before committing.
Inspect names, passport number, sponsor or purpose, permitted activity and expiry on every issued record. Keep the approval, receipt and a copy of the entry stamp outside the passport.
Make housing support the move
Asmara and regional assignments differ in utilities, communications, healthcare and permission to travel. Secure employer-supported housing and medical contingencies rather than relying on an informal lease.
Verify landlord authority, lease language, deposit, inventory, utilities, internet and early-exit terms. Keep the real address and payment trail for immigration, banking and employer files.
Set up banking, payroll and tax evidence
Document salary access, tax, foreign transfers and emergency funds. Banking and communications constraints require a tested contingency before the move.
Ask the bank and tax authority for their live identity, permit, address, tax-number and source-of-funds requirements. Immigration status alone does not determine tax residence: retain travel days, payslips, foreign income and business invoices.
Plan each family member and essential service
Dependants need separate status, school and health planning; adult work requires authority. People with Eritrean family links should obtain nationality-specific legal advice before travel.
A dependant, student or family residence document should not be treated as an adult work permit without confirmation. Carry legalised civil records, prescriptions, vaccination records and prior-school reports.
Control renewal, changes and current risk
FCDO advice current on 12 September 2026 advises against all travel within 25km of all land borders and warns that a crisis could quickly affect internal and outbound travel.
Confirm the precise destination, internal travel permissions, insurer cover and independent departure plan. A consular visa is not a guarantee of movement or consular support.
