Moving to Guatemala: permission and practical setup

IGM residence and Ministry of Labour work authorisation are separate decisions. Select the residence category first, keep visitor status lawful while instructed, and make payroll and family registrations follow the approved activity.

Coordinate residence with permission to work

IGM lists temporary and permanent residence categories, while foreign-worker authorisation is administered through the Labour Ministry. Employer sponsorship, family connection or qualifying income must be evidenced under the route actually used; a company or lease is not a work right.

Resolve legalisation and Spanish translations early

Use the IGM category sheet for passports, police certificates, civil records, financial support and sponsor evidence. Confirm foreign-document apostille or legalisation and translation rules before travel, and retain proof of every migration filing or extension.

Finish the IGM document and address sequence

Follow the approval or registration instructions given by IGM and keep the residence document valid. Verify the landlord, inventory, utilities, security and commute before a long lease; keep consistent address evidence for migration, tax, bank and school use.

Connect SAT, IGSS and banking to the real work

For local employment, ask the employer to confirm Labour authorisation, IGSS registration and payroll treatment. Obtain the tax identifier or registration SAT requires for the activity. A residence card does not decide tax residence or foreign-income treatment, and banks perform separate checks.

Confirm health and school access before choosing a district

Map public, IGSS, employer and private care for each dependant and retain interim cover until enrolment is active. Ask Education and the intended school for placement, address, vaccination and prior-school records; verify each dependant and any working partner separately.

Check licence recognition and border paperwork

Confirm with the transit authority whether exchange, testing or another resident step applies before driving. Use SAT Customs for household goods and MAGA animal-health instructions for pets; do not rely on airline acceptance as import clearance.
