Check immigration and work separately
The Island is not part of the UK. Common Travel Area status matters, but use Manx guidance for residence, study, business and family purposes. A UK or other island permission is not automatically sufficient.
Work permits are a separate local control even where immigration permission is unnecessary. Employer and worker must confirm the permit or exemption before work.

Build island-specific services
Test heating, broadband, transport and ferry access before a long lease. Register with Manx tax and National Insurance as required; HMRC updates do not complete local onboarding.
Confirm Manx Care eligibility rather than assuming NHS transfer. Check school catchment, local driving and vehicle rules, and pet transport before booking. Track immigration and work-permit expiry separately.
Make the island housing plan resilient
Test winter heating, broadband, buses, commute and ferry or flight needs before a long lease. Verify landlord, inventory, deposit, utilities and notice terms.
Property does not create immigration or work rights. Price freight, crossings, emergency travel and temporary accommodation from current quotes.
Register work, tax and National Insurance
Confirm the local work permit or exemption before the start date even where immigration permission is unnecessary. Keep the employer decision and contract.
The Island has its own tax and National Insurance administration. An HMRC update is not local registration; preserve arrival, payroll, pension and overseas-income records.
Confirm Manx Care and school access
Do not assume NHS registration transfers. Confirm Manx Care eligibility, charges and access, maintain interim cover and bring prescription records.
Ask schools about catchment, places, address evidence, prior reports, additional-needs support and transport before fixing housing.
Check licences, vehicles, pets and renewals
The Island has its own driving and vehicle administration. Check licence exchange, vehicle registration, insurance and pet carrier requirements before transport.
Track immigration and work-permit expiry separately. Keep critical documents, medicines and essentials with you in case freight or sailings are disrupted.
Keep local permissions and services in one control file
Carry immigration evidence, the work-permit or exemption decision, contract, lease, identity records and medicine supply. Before the first shift, have the employer confirm the local right-to-work record. Establish the address, contact Manx tax and National Insurance, then confirm Manx Care rather than assuming mainland records transferred.
Keep an existing bank account while local address and source-of-funds checks complete. Record ferry and flight alternatives for urgent travel and keep essentials outside freight. An employer, study or family change may affect immigration and the work permit differently, so check both authorities before acting.
Maintain separate Manx records
File immigration grants, work decisions, employer correspondence, lease, tax, National Insurance and Manx Care confirmation. Assign each renewal owner because the employer may control work permission.
Preserve travel dates and overseas income. Keep school, custody and clinical records for family, plus transport, insurance and veterinary documents for imported cars or pets.
Make island life operational
Reconcile the first payslip with Manx tax and National Insurance details rather than assuming UK coding followed automatically. At home, record heating responsibility, broadband lead time, meters and inventory. Test the commute without a car and keep funds for disrupted travel or temporary accommodation.
Confirm primary-care registration and repeat-prescription arrangements, school transport and how off-island specialist appointments are organised. Keep ferry and flight alternatives for urgent travel. Before remote work, an employer change or a long absence, review immigration, work-permit and tax consequences separately.
- Confirm who owns the work-permit renewal.
- Keep the exemption decision with employment records.
- Record the Manx tax reference separately from HMRC.
- Plan prescription continuity before arrival.
- Keep a disruption reserve for off-island travel.
- Recheck permission before starting remote work.
- Save ferry, flight, employer and authority contacts offline in case weather interrupts urgent travel.
