Moving to Kiribati: work permission and island planning

A move to Tarawa, Kiritimati or another island needs a purpose-specific immigration plan and a realistic service and transport plan. Visa-free visitor entry is not a substitute for arranging the work or investment permission your activity requires.

Match the work or investment to the application

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration publishes separate work, investment, student, religious-worker and visitor forms. The investment authority describes foreign hiring in technical roles not readily available locally, supported by evidence of local recruitment.

Ask the employer for the proposed role, qualifications, contract, island and immigration sponsor. For an investment, separate company approval from your personal visa and the permissions for employees. A business idea or company registration alone is not the complete relocation process.

Get the household and sponsor evidence ready

Use the live category checklist to establish passport, police, medical, financial and sponsorship evidence. Agree who supplies accommodation and return-travel support. Confirm the current submission and payment method with Immigration rather than sending documents to an unverified agent.

Prepare relationship and custody evidence for the household and obtain written confirmation of each person’s status. Ask separately whether an accompanying adult may work or needs a different permission. Keep copies of the approval and sponsor undertaking independently.

Do not treat Tarawa and Kiritimati as one housing market

Choose the island with the actual employer and household needs. Ask how you reach work, a school, Immigration and treatment from the proposed address, including what happens if the usual transport is cancelled.

Check water storage, electricity, sanitation, internet, repair responsibility and lease-exit terms before payment. Establish the landlord’s authority and any land-access limits. A lease should support the practical move; it does not itself confer immigration or wider land rights.

Check treatment continuity before the flight

FCDO warns of limited medical facilities and the possible need for medical evacuation. Obtain cover for the actual island, occupation and existing conditions and confirm how evacuation and treatment abroad would be paid for.

Discuss medicines and water-related precautions with a clinician. Identify a provider near the proposed home and keep a treatment summary available to the family. For an outer-island posting, ask the employer how an urgent transfer reaches the international departure point.

Make payroll and payments practical

Ask the employer and chosen bank how salary, rent, cash access and overseas transfers will work on the intended island. Verify accepted identification, permit, address and source-of-funds documents before sending the main relocation funds.

Budget separately for shipping, connecting travel, temporary housing and a delayed first salary. Keep payment and travel records for tax advice in Kiribati and the previous country. These are personal cost categories, not a published national minimum-income requirement.

Recheck the approved activity when plans change

Inspect the issued conditions for employer, occupation, location, entry and expiry. Ask Immigration before a new job, business activity or dependant change, and preserve the contract and financial-support evidence needed for renewal.

Long-term residence is a distinct application, not something produced automatically by a visitor extension or property arrangement. Keep a departure contingency and check onward-country entry permission before the current status runs out.
