Moving to Kosovo: a practical relocation guide

A stay beyond the visitor allowance or for work requires the appropriate Kosovo residence permit. Document recognition, local vehicle insurance and sensitive border routing deserve attention before the move.

Choose a residence purpose before the visitor period ends

Kosovo permits a visitor stay of up to 90 days in 180 for eligible travellers, but local employment requires temporary residence for work. Family, study and research use their own temporary-residence grounds.

The work checklist requires a travel document valid at least three months beyond the requested permit and criminal-record evidence translated into an official language. Obtain the live list before travel.

Use a provable actual address

Take a written lease and owner evidence suitable for the residence application. Ask the Department for Citizenship, Asylum and Migration how arrival and later address changes are recorded.

Keep entry evidence and receipts. A hotel booking or bank account is not a substitute for the accommodation evidence in a residence file.

Connect the permit to payroll and services

Do not start local work on visitor status or a pending application. Ask the employer to document the lawful start, payroll and pension registration.

Confirm public or private health cover for each family member. Obtain the Tax Administration fiscal number that applies and keep foreign-income and travel-day records.

Plan dependants and education separately

Each dependant needs status, relationship evidence, accommodation and cover. Recognition practices can vary for documents issued by jurisdictions that do not recognise Kosovo, so ask the receiving office before legalising or translating.

Contact the municipality and school with prior reports and language needs; residence approval does not decide placement.

Check banks, driving and border routing

Banks set identity, address, tax-residence and source-of-funds checks. Cross-border transfers may need additional documentary explanation.

A European green card is not valid vehicle insurance in Kosovo; buy locally valid third-party cover. Border routing through Serbia can raise entry-record issues, so confirm the itinerary with official advice.

Monitor northern tensions and renewal

Northern Kosovo remains politically sensitive and localised incidents can occur with little warning. Avoid demonstrations and keep to main roads in areas affected by old mines or unexploded ordnance.

Start renewal before expiry with updated job, home and insurance evidence. Permanent residence is a separate application and qualifying history should be confirmed by the Ministry.
