Moving to Liberia: permission, arrival and practical setup
Liberia separates entry, work permission, residence and re-entry records. A visa on arrival or embassy entry visa does not authorise employment, and a re-entry card only supports an already valid resident status.

Separate entry, residence and work permission
Liberia separates entry, work permission, residence and re-entry records. A visa on arrival or embassy entry visa does not authorise employment, and a re-entry card only supports an already valid resident status.
A visa waiver, visitor visa or business-visitor permission is not an open right to take employment or provide local services. Remote work also needs an immigration, labour and tax analysis unless the authority publishes a route that expressly covers it.
| Plan | VisaAtlas route | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Work permit | Work Permit | Labour approval is required before employment. |
| Resident permit authority check | Resident Permit Authority Check | Confirm residence documentation with Immigration. |
| Re-entry permit card | Re-entry Permit Card | Re-entry supports valid residence; it is not the residence basis. |
Complete the arrival record
Have the employer coordinate the Ministry of Labour work permit and Liberia Immigration Service residence step. Check biometrics, employer, occupation and expiries and keep each receipt.
Inspect names, passport number, sponsor or purpose, permitted activity and expiry on every issued record. Keep the approval, receipt and a copy of the entry stamp outside the passport.
Make housing support the move
Monrovia housing should be checked for rain and drainage, power, water, road access and security; mining, agriculture or field locations need evacuation and communications plans.
Verify landlord authority, lease language, deposit, inventory, utilities, internet and early-exit terms. Keep the real address and payment trail for immigration, banking and employer files.
Set up banking, payroll and tax evidence
Agree payroll currency, tax registration, bank or mobile-money use and transfer evidence. Preserve both US-dollar and Liberian-dollar transaction records.
Ask the bank and tax authority for their live identity, permit, address, tax-number and source-of-funds requirements. Immigration status alone does not determine tax residence: retain travel days, payslips, foreign income and business invoices.
Plan each family member and essential service
Dependants need their own entry and residence file and an adult must obtain work permission. Secure school, vaccination and healthcare arrangements before the lease.
A dependant, student or family residence document should not be treated as an adult work permit without confirmation. Carry legalised civil records, prescriptions, vaccination records and prior-school reports.
Control renewal, changes and current risk
Renew work and residence records before seeking re-entry and clear employer changes. Check current road, election and public-health advice before travel.
Read current official travel advice for Liberia, the exact region and any overland route before travel. Confirm that insurance covers the location and planned work.
