Moving to Mauritius: keep work, residence and remote living permissions separate
Mauritius uses different residence and work permissions. An Occupation Permit can combine work and residence for defined categories, while employment generally requires both residence and work approval; a visitor or business entry is not a work route.

Select the permission that matches the activity
The Passport and Immigration Office states that a person seeking employment may need a Residence Permit and a Work Permit, and should not enter to work as a tourist or business visitor. The Department of Home Affairs describes the Occupation Permit as a combined work and residence permit with professional, investor and self-employed categories. Match the proposed employer, business, income and activity to the route before travel.
A Premium Visa is designed for eligible longer stays while working remotely for an overseas business; it should not be described as permission to take a local job. Retired, student, family and investor cases have different evidence. Dependants may need their own residence evidence and are not automatically authorised to work.
| Plan | Candidate route | Critical boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying local professional | Occupation Permit (Professional) | Do not start employment before approval |
| Qualifying local professional or self-employed activity | Occupation Permit category | Activity and conditions must match the application |
| Overseas remote work | Premium Visa | No local employment is implied |
| Retirement | Residence Permit for Retired Non-Citizens (50+) | Residence does not automatically grant work rights |
| Family member | Dependent or family residence process | Check work eligibility separately |
Build the application and arrival file
Keep the passport, photographs, application forms, employment or business evidence, sponsor letter, work-permit application, civil records and proof of funds in a single indexed file. The Passport and Immigration Office specifically says overseas applicants should obtain the required approval before travelling. Check whether the employer or local company submits the application and which originals must be presented.
At arrival, compare the passport endorsement or permit with the approved activity, duration and employer. Keep copies outside the passport. If a job, company, address or family composition changes, ask the Passport and Immigration Office or Economic Development Board whether a new approval is needed rather than quietly changing activities.
Rent with the island and commute in mind
Compare a furnished short let with a longer lease, ask who pays utilities and internet, inspect humidity and storm protection, and record the inventory. Confirm the landlord’s identity and the property’s location before transferring a deposit. Port Louis, business districts, coastal areas and inland towns create different commute and service patterns; do not use a national cost claim as a personal budget.
Ask the employer or school about transport, parking and working hours. Keep proof of address for banking, permit and service applications. Do not let a tourist booking stand in for a long-term residence address if an authority requires evidence of genuine accommodation.
Separate payroll, banking and tax residence
Open a local account only after asking the bank what identity, address, permit and source-of-funds documents it accepts. Keep an overseas account for transition and avoid moving all funds before the account is operational. Employers and permit sponsors should explain payroll, social contributions and the documents needed for salary payment.
Mauritian tax residence is not determined simply by the name of the visa. Section 73 of the Income Tax Act provides alternative tests: domicile in Mauritius unless the permanent place of abode is outside Mauritius; at least 183 days in the income year; or at least 270 days across that income year and the two preceding income years. A shorter stay therefore does not automatically mean non-residence. Keep travel dates, contracts, local and overseas income, remittance records and tax certificates; ask MRA or a qualified adviser about the test and any treaty applicable to your circumstances before moving salary or investments.
Arrange healthcare and family records before the first appointment
Carry prescriptions, vaccination records, medical summaries and insurance contacts. Confirm whether the employer or private policy covers each family member and whether pre-existing conditions, maternity, dental or evacuation have exclusions. Public and private care access should be checked locally; do not promise that a residence permit alone creates comprehensive cover.
For children, contact the chosen school with passports, birth records, prior reports and vaccination evidence. Dependant residence applications require relationship documents, and the Passport and Immigration Office notes that dependants are not automatically allowed to work without a valid work permit.
Make transport and driving a separate compliance task
If you need a Mauritian provisional licence, the Police Traffic Branch accepts applications online or through a police station. Its document list for non-citizens includes the original passport and work or residence permit. Online applicants complete processing at the Licensing Office; police-station applications are forwarded to Traffic Branch and eligible applicants are notified to attend. This is a provisional-licence process, not evidence that every foreign licence can be exchanged. Ask Traffic Branch separately whether your existing licence and vehicle category are recognised before driving.
Choose housing with the actual commute, school route, medical access and storm or flooding exposure in mind. Save emergency contacts and keep a plan for days when public transport, ferries or roads are disrupted.
Renew the right document, not just the passport stamp
Occupation Permits are granted for a defined period and may be renewable only when the category conditions continue. A Work Permit, Residence Permit, Premium Visa and dependent status are different records. Calendar each expiry and begin with the responsible authority, employer or EDB well before the date shown on the card or approval.
When leaving or switching status, obtain employment and tax documents, settle utilities and landlord obligations, notify schools and insurers, and check whether the family members’ permits end with the principal applicant. Do not describe permanent residence or citizenship as automatic after a stay; both require their own legal conditions and applications.
