Moving to Micronesia: permits and choosing an island base

Plan for the Federated States of Micronesia and the particular state—Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap or Kosrae—not for the wider Micronesia region. Match the national immigration basis with the actual job, household and island services before relocating.

Choose a permit for the activity

The Immigration Act distinguishes alien-worker, investor, student, researcher, missionary and family permits. Private employment needs the appropriate employment process; the general entry application expressly excludes private-sector employment. Do not use that form as a universal work application.

Short visitor entry, a government assignment and treaty-based access are different branches. Have the employer or Immigration confirm the branch for your citizenship and activity. US-linked Compact rights should not be extended to someone merely holding a US visa or residence card.

Choose the state with the assignment

Identify where you will actually work and live, and which national and state offices handle the required business or professional permissions. A Pohnpei-based offer is not a promise of equivalent housing, school places or transport on another island.

Ask the sponsor for arrival pickup, temporary accommodation, onward transport and a contact if the flight schedule changes. Before a lease, verify landlord authority, water and power arrangements, communications, repairs and early-exit terms. These are practical checks, not a standard national tenancy package.

Give each family member a usable plan

Family permission can depend on the principal applicant’s status and duration. Keep separate passport, relationship and custody records and confirm each adult’s right to work. A spouse of a citizen follows a different legal branch from an accompanying foreign worker’s spouse.

Get school-place and support-needs confirmation before shipping belongings. Compare the daily journey with the actual home and worksite. Keep original civil records accessible during travel and ask what translation or certification the receiving office accepts.

Arrange care beyond the local clinic

FCDO describes facilities suitable for uncomplicated treatment but limited for serious or complex conditions. Evacuation to Guam or Australia may be necessary. Confirm medical transport, payment authorisation and permission to enter the receiving destination.

Check the continuing-treatment plan with your clinician before departure. Keep medicine and medical records accessible, and ask who arranges travel from the outer island to the departure airport. Do not assume an immigration permit establishes comprehensive healthcare entitlement.

Test payments and communications early

The US dollar is used, but FCDO warns that ATM availability is limited. Arrange a secure cash and payment backup appropriate to the island. Confirm local mobile service and device compatibility rather than relying on an overseas roaming plan.

Ask the bank for its identity, immigration, address and source-of-funds evidence. Agree payroll deductions and record overseas income and travel days for tax advice. Work, residence, tax and bank onboarding are related tasks, but completing one does not settle the others.

Clear a status change before acting

The Act restricts changing immigration status while in the country without written authorisation. Ask Immigration whether departure and reapplication are required before changing the job or purpose. It also provides for noncitizen registration with legal and treaty exemptions.

Calendar passport, employment and family expiries separately. Retain approval and travel records and keep funds for a delayed or earlier departure. For a business, confirm the continuing business permission as well as personal immigration status.
