Moving to Mongolia: a practical relocation guide

Mongolia uses purpose-specific residence permissions and requires changes of address and passport information to be recorded with the Immigration Agency. Local employment needs the work and residence chain, not merely a business visa.

Match visa permission, residence and work

Employment, investment, family and study use different Immigration Agency categories. Confirm the inviting organisation and visa permission before entry, then complete the residence application in the channel stated for that category.

A company role or investment registration does not authorise unrelated employment. Permanent residence is a separate status with its own eligibility.

Register and keep the residence address current

The Immigration Agency provides separate services to apply for residence, extend it, change category, change residence address and update passport information. Follow the arrival instruction issued with the visa and obtain receipts.

Use a written lease that supports the registered address; report a move through the dedicated address-change service rather than waiting for renewal.

Confirm the authorised employer and role

Have the employer complete the labour and immigration permissions before work begins. Keep the contract, approval and residence card together.

A new job, occupation or employer can require fresh labour permission and a residence-category update. Confirm before changing.

Prepare for climate, housing and medical access

Inspect heating, insulation, air quality and utility responsibility before taking a home, especially for an Ulaanbaatar winter. Verify the landlord and inventory.

Ask the employer about social and health-insurance registration and keep private cover, including evacuation where needed, until every family member has confirmed access.

Set up tax, school and banking records

Obtain the foreigner registration and taxpayer records needed for payroll and bank KYC. Immigration residence and tax residence remain separate.

Bring translated civil and school records. Ask the school about placement, language and winter attendance arrangements rather than assuming the residence card completes enrolment.

Extend and update before documents diverge

Calendar the passport, residence, work permission and dependant status together. Use the Immigration Agency extension and passport-update services before expiry or replacement.

Check foreign-licence recognition and vehicle registration with the transport authority before regular driving.
