Moving to Mozambique: permission, arrival and practical setup

Separate entry, residence and work permission

Mozambique’s eVisa portal distinguishes tourism, business, investment and sector-specific work purposes. For an ordinary long assignment, have the employer confirm labour authorisation, entry visa and residence documentation rather than stretching a business eVisa.

A visa waiver, visitor visa or business-visitor permission is not an open right to take employment or provide local services. Remote work also needs an immigration, labour and tax analysis unless the authority publishes a route that expressly covers it.

Complete the arrival record

Confirm the issuing and collection point, then complete residence, tax and labour records with the employer. Names and employing entity must remain consistent across Portuguese-language documents.

Inspect names, passport number, sponsor or purpose, permitted activity and expiry on every issued record. Keep the approval, receipt and a copy of the entry stamp outside the passport.

Make housing support the move

Maputo, Beira, Nampula and northern project areas differ sharply in road access, cyclone exposure, healthcare and security. Inspect drainage, water, power, communications and the evacuation route before accepting housing.

Verify landlord authority, lease language, deposit, inventory, utilities, internet and early-exit terms. Keep the real address and payment trail for immigration, banking and employer files.

Set up banking, payroll and tax evidence

Clarify payroll currency, withholding and bank onboarding, and keep proof of foreign transfers. Contractors must determine whether local clients or presence trigger licensing and tax obligations.

Ask the bank and tax authority for their live identity, permit, address, tax-number and source-of-funds requirements. Immigration status alone does not determine tax residence: retain travel days, payslips, foreign income and business invoices.

Plan each family member and essential service

Do not move dependants until their residence basis, evacuation cover and school plan are confirmed. A family or visitor status should not be used for employment.

A dependant, student or family residence document should not be treated as an adult work permit without confirmation. Carry legalised civil records, prescriptions, vaccination records and prior-school reports.
