Moving to New Caledonia: a practical relocation guide
New Caledonia is outside Schengen and runs local labour rules alongside French State immigration. Foreign nationals, including EU nationals, generally need New Caledonian work authorisation before salaried work; that approval does not itself grant entry or stay.

Join local work approval to French State status
New Caledonia’s labour authority says every non-French national, including an EU national, must obtain local authorisation before salaried work. Local-employment priority and the employer’s vacancy process form part of the assessment.
The same authority stresses that work authorisation alone does not grant entry or residence. Obtain the visa or residence document from the French State service for New Caledonia; a Schengen permission is not automatically enough.

Build the employer’s local-labour file
The work-authorisation page lists the vacancy-deposit proof, contract, passport, medical and repatriation insurance and accommodation evidence. The employer, foreign worker or authorised representative can file through the territorial service.
The issued authorisation is job-specific. A different profession, even with the same employer, requires a new application; do not begin the changed work first.
Complete residence and payroll separately
Present the work authorisation with the visa or residence application as directed and inspect territorial validity. Keep the High Commission and territorial labour decisions because they prove different things.
Complete the employer’s local hiring declaration, payroll and social registration. A French metropolitan employment record does not replace New Caledonian onboarding.
Choose the province and secure resilient housing
Nouméa, the rest of Grande Terre and the Loyalty Islands differ in jobs, flights, ferries, schools and healthcare. Confirm province and worksite before renting and inspect cyclone resilience, water, power, internet and access.
Keep the accommodation proof used for work authorisation. If the employer provides the home, document repatriation and move-out terms when the job ends.
Plan family status and evacuation by island
Run every noncitizen family member through New Caledonia-specific State rules. A spouse should verify local work-authorisation requirements even when their residence document permits family life.
Confirm CAFAT or insurer registration, local provider network and off-island referral or repatriation cover. The work-authorisation file itself requires medical and repatriation insurance evidence.
Keep territorial tax and banking evidence
New Caledonia has local tax, social and banking processes. Ask payroll and the bank for the work authorisation, residence, address and tax documents they need.
Track travel, overseas income, benefits and transfers and obtain cross-border advice. A metropolitan French tax or social number does not answer every New Caledonian obligation.
Renew during the published filing window
The labour authority says renewal is not automatic and gives a filing window in the months before expiry. Use the live page for the current window and renew the residence document separately.
Clear profession or employer changes before work, confirm international re-entry, and close tax, CAFAT, lease and vehicle records on departure.
