Moving to Niger: permission, arrival and practical setup

Niger’s official page explains entry visas but does not establish an open relocation or remote-work route. An employer-led move requires written confirmation of work and residence permissions in addition to the consular visa.

Separate entry, residence and work permission

Niger’s official page explains entry visas but does not establish an open relocation or remote-work route. An employer-led move requires written confirmation of work and residence permissions in addition to the consular visa.

A visa waiver, visitor visa or business-visitor permission is not an open right to take employment or provide local services. Remote work also needs an immigration, labour and tax analysis unless the authority publishes a route that expressly covers it.

Complete the arrival record

Do not travel merely because a visa issues. If an essential deployment proceeds despite official advice, the employer should pre-arrange immigration presentation, secure airport transfer, communications and evacuation.

Inspect names, passport number, sponsor or purpose, permitted activity and expiry on every issued record. Keep the approval, receipt and a copy of the entry stamp outside the passport.

Make housing support the move

Ordinary house-hunting guidance is inappropriate while FCDO advises against all travel. Accommodation should be part of an organisational security plan with access control, water, power, medical and evacuation capability.

Verify landlord authority, lease language, deposit, inventory, utilities, internet and early-exit terms. Keep the real address and payment trail for immigration, banking and employer files.

Set up banking, payroll and tax evidence

The contract should document salary access, tax handling, emergency cash and evacuation funding. Avoid deposits or asset transfers until the deployment and permissions pass security review.

Ask the bank and tax authority for their live identity, permit, address, tax-number and source-of-funds requirements. Immigration status alone does not determine tax residence: retain travel days, payslips, foreign income and business invoices.

Plan each family member and essential service

Do not infer dependant entry, work, school or healthcare rights from the principal visa. Family accompaniment needs an exceptional, separately documented immigration and risk assessment.

A dependant, student or family residence document should not be treated as an adult work permit without confirmation. Carry legalised civil records, prescriptions, vaccination records and prior-school reports.

Control renewal, changes and current risk

FCDO advice current on 12 September 2026 advises against all travel to Niger and warns that insurance could be invalidated. Immigration approval does not override that advice or guarantee assistance.

The live FCDO notice cites terrorist and criminal kidnapping risk and political instability, including in Niamey. Treat deferral or cancellation as the default unless an essential employer has a credible security and exit plan.
