Returning to the UK: status, tax and healthcare planning
Returning rights depend on nationality and immigration status; tax residence and healthcare access are separate questions that need their own checks.

Identify the legal basis for return
A British citizen normally returns using the British passport or status evidence. A person with indefinite leave to remain or settled status must check whether it remains valid after time abroad. Someone without a right of abode may need a returning-resident, family or work route before travelling to live in the UK.
A non-British spouse or child cannot rely on the British person’s nationality alone. Check the family member’s visa, permit or digital status and preserve the decision evidence.
Check tax residence and temporary non-residence
HMRC says a person returning after living abroad will usually be UK resident again, but the facts and timing matter. The Statutory Residence Test, foreign income, gains, pensions and treaty rules can affect the result.
If the return is within five years and the earlier residence conditions apply, temporary non-residence rules may tax certain income or gains. This is a reason to keep records and seek advice, not to assume every return has the same result.
Healthcare and the first address
NHS England access is not simply a citizenship slogan: ordinary residence, immigration status and the relevant nation’s rules matter. Check NHS England if returning to England and the corresponding service if returning to Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
Arrange an address, GP or local health registration, bank access, utilities, school or childcare and transport. Keep private cover while eligibility is being clarified.
Records, pensions and practical restart
Keep overseas tax returns, sale documents, pension statements, employment records, medical files and children’s records. Tell HMRC when required and check National Insurance and State Pension records.
Do not close overseas or UK accounts, cancel pensions or stop benefits solely because you are returning. Ask the responsible office how residence affects the specific product or payment.
Your moving checklist
Tick off the tasks that apply to you. The timing is a planning order, not a substitute for the deadlines on your permission or an official instruction.
