Moving to Saudi Arabia: a practical relocation guide

A Saudi move is built around either an employer-sponsored work and Iqama chain or an independently qualifying Premium Residency product. Entry permission, residence and work permission are separate questions, and ordinary dependant residence does not create a general right to work.

Choose the sponsor and work basis first

For an ordinary job, the employer obtains the work-authorisation chain and the foreign worker completes the embassy, medical and biometric steps before the Iqama is issued. A tourist, family-visit or business-visit entry is not permission to take local employment. Ask the employer to confirm the occupation, contract and intended arrival status in writing before travel.

Premium Residency is an employer-independent residence family with several products and its own eligibility evidence. The Saudi freelance document in the route catalogue is not a foreign-resident visa: the official service is limited to Saudi nationals. It should therefore be used only as a warning, not as a relocation plan.

Audit the contract and document chain

Non-Saudi employment must be covered by a written fixed-term contract. Confirm legal employer name, occupation, work location, salary components, probation, accommodation, insurance, flights and family support. The Ministry states that the employer bears recruitment, work and residence permit, renewal, profession-change and qualifying return-ticket costs; a demand that the worker fund these items is a reason to pause.

Prepare passport, degree and professional evidence, civil-status records and any requested attestations before the employer files. Regulated professions may have a licensing step beyond immigration. Keep copies of the signed contract and every application number outside the employer portal.

Finish medical, biometrics and Iqama issuance

The work-visa process includes medical examination and biometric fingerprints. After arrival, follow the sponsor checklist for any local examination, fingerprint appointment and Iqama issuance. Do not treat the entry visa or a pending Iqama as proof that every downstream service is active.

Check the Arabic and English name, date of birth, nationality, sponsor and occupation on the issued record immediately. Absher and the resident identity then become the operational keys for government services. Save the Iqama expiry date and assign renewal ownership with the sponsor.

Give each dependant a status and insurance plan

Family residence is distinct from a family visit. A resident may sponsor eligible first-degree family for residence for the duration of the sponsor's permit, subject to the current process and evidence. Prepare authenticated marriage and birth records and medical insurance for each applicant; never plan a school year around a visit extension.

Ordinary family residence does not itself authorise unrestricted work. A narrow Ajeer companion process exists for eligible adult companions in education and health establishments and requires valid residence plus a permit. Premium Residency has different benefits: the Center states that the holder, spouse and eligible children may work in the private sector, except in Saudi-only jobs. Confirm the exact family member and permission before any start date.

Verify the policy, not just the insurance card

The Council of Health Insurance says an employer pays cover for the employee and eligible dependants. Coverage for a newly arrived non-Saudi is tied to entry or service transfer if the policy is arranged within the stated period. Ask HR for the insurer, policy number, network, effective date and dependant list before cancelling travel cover.

Parents, siblings and other companions are not automatically an employer obligation; the employee sponsor may need to insure them. Keep emergency cover for the transition and check maternity, chronic-condition, dental and medicine limits rather than assuming that an Iqama guarantees a particular benefit package.

Connect Ejar, national address and payroll

Use an authenticated Ejar residential contract and review the parties, unit, term, payment schedule, renewal and termination terms before electronic acceptance. Photograph the inventory and meters. Once the address is usable, register or update the Saudi National Address; residents can obtain proof of address through the official service.

A bank may ask for passport, Iqama, national address, mobile number and employment evidence, but its checks are institution-specific. Saudi tax rules also distinguish salary employment from taxable business and Saudi-source activities. Do not convert the phrase “no salary tax” into advice about foreign-country filing, self-employment or company exposure; keep day counts and seek cross-border advice.

Stage driving, school and pet logistics

Residents can use Absher to book authorised driving-school and licensing steps. Whether a foreign licence changes the training or test path depends on the issuing country and current traffic rules, so verify it before buying a car and make sure the vehicle insurer accepts the driver.

For a pet, obtain the Ministry import permit before shipment, check current permitted origins and dog-breed rules, and align the microchip, rabies evidence and government health certificate. For children, approach schools early with prior reports and ask for their residence, age, vaccination, translation and transfer-certificate requirements; a school offer does not grant residence.

Control renewals, transfers and exit records

Track passport, work permit, Iqama, contract and insurance expiries separately. If the employer, occupation or workplace changes, use the authorised Qiwa or ministry workflow before performing the new work. Premium Residency holders should instead monitor their product conditions and family records.

Exit/re-entry and final-exit services are formal electronic processes. Before a long trip or final departure, verify the relevant document for every family member, settle traffic and tenancy matters, preserve employment and insurance records, and obtain evidence of permit cancellation or transfer. Do not rely on an airline booking as proof that immigration status has been closed.
