Moving to Somalia: permission, arrival and practical setup
Somalia publishes a work-and-residence permit separately from visitor, tourist, business and student entry. Obtain the work-and-residence approval before employment; a business permit or visitor visa is not an open work right.

Somalia publishes a work-and-residence permit separately from visitor, tourist, business and student entry. Obtain the work-and-residence approval before employment; a business permit or visitor visa is not an open work right.
A visa waiver, visitor visa or business-visitor permission is not an open right to take employment or provide local services. Remote work also needs an immigration, labour and tax analysis unless the authority publishes a route that expressly covers it.

Complete the arrival record
Do not travel on visa approval alone. An essential organisation must coordinate permit collection, secure airport transfer, local identity and movement protocols, communications, medical and evacuation support.
Inspect names, passport number, sponsor or purpose, permitted activity and expiry on every issued record. Keep the approval, receipt and a copy of the entry stamp outside the passport.
Make housing support the move
FCDO advises against all travel to most of Somalia, including most of Somaliland, and against all but essential travel to the named north-western regions. Accommodation must be security-managed.
Verify landlord authority, lease language, deposit, inventory, utilities, internet and early-exit terms. Keep the real address and payment trail for immigration, banking and employer files.
Set up banking, payroll and tax evidence
Put salary delivery, tax, insurance, hardship and evacuation funding in the contract. Maintain emergency funds and do not move dependants or household assets.
Ask the bank and tax authority for their live identity, permit, address, tax-number and source-of-funds requirements. Immigration status alone does not determine tax residence: retain travel days, payslips, foreign income and business invoices.
Plan each family member and essential service
Family relocation is a separate exceptional risk decision; no visitor or dependant assumption creates work, school or healthcare rights. Consular help and evacuation may be severely limited.
A dependant, student or family residence document should not be treated as an adult work permit without confirmation. Carry legalised civil records, prescriptions, vaccination records and prior-school reports.
Control renewal, changes and current risk
FCDO advice current on 12 September 2026 warns of terrorism and continuing violence and says anyone remaining should have a plan not reliant on the UK government. Reassess continuously.
A visa or work-and-residence permit does not mean the destination, road or flight is safe or insured. Treat current professional security advice as a separate go/no-go gate.
