Moving to South Sudan: permission, arrival and practical setup

Separate entry, residence and work permission

South Sudan’s eVisa portal grants entry, not an open work, residence or remote-work right. An essential employer deployment needs separately documented labour and residence permission and cannot rely on a multiple-entry eVisa.

A visa waiver, visitor visa or business-visitor permission is not an open right to take employment or provide local services. Remote work also needs an immigration, labour and tax analysis unless the authority publishes a route that expressly covers it.

Complete the arrival record

Do not travel on eVisa approval alone. Any essential deployment needs pre-arranged secure airport transfer, immigration presentation, communications, medical and extraction support.

Inspect names, passport number, sponsor or purpose, permitted activity and expiry on every issued record. Keep the approval, receipt and a copy of the entry stamp outside the passport.

Make housing support the move

Ordinary rental advice is inappropriate while official advice is against all travel. Accommodation should be controlled within an employer security plan with shelter, water, power, communications and evacuation capacity.

Verify landlord authority, lease language, deposit, inventory, utilities, internet and early-exit terms. Keep the real address and payment trail for immigration, banking and employer files.

Set up banking, payroll and tax evidence

Put salary access, tax handling, hardship benefits, insurance and emergency evacuation funding into the contract. Avoid moving dependants, assets or household goods.

Ask the bank and tax authority for their live identity, permit, address, tax-number and source-of-funds requirements. Immigration status alone does not determine tax residence: retain travel days, payslips, foreign income and business invoices.

Plan each family member and essential service

Family accompaniment requires a separate, exceptional security and immigration decision; an entry visa does not provide school, healthcare or adult work rights.

A dependant, student or family residence document should not be treated as an adult work permit without confirmation. Carry legalised civil records, prescriptions, vaccination records and prior-school reports.

Control renewal, changes and current risk

FCDO advice current on 12 September 2026 advises against all travel to South Sudan, notes armed violence and criminality, and says in-person UK consular assistance is unavailable.

The political and security situation can deteriorate rapidly and routes, including Juba airport, can become unavailable. A visa is not assurance of safety, insurance or evacuation.
