Moving to Tajikistan: a practical relocation guide
Tajikistan separates the visa category from foreign-labour permission and place-of-stay registration. A business K visa is not the same as an M work visa, and border-region travel may require an additional permit.

Use the correct consular category
The Consular Department lists M for work, K for business or temporary business activity, C for qualifying investors and O for study. Local employment should use the work and labour-authorisation chain, not a tourist e-Visa.
Confirm invitation or supporting authority and whether the GBAO permit is needed for the intended location.
| Purpose | Route to examine | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Employment | Work Visa Category M | Employer and foreign-labour permission must support M status. |
| Investment | Investor Visa Categories C and MOI | Use qualifying investment approval; confirm operational work separately. |
| Study | Study Visa Categories O1 and O2 | Recognised institution and separate work check. |
Complete host and migration registration
Ask the hotel, landlord or inviting organisation to complete the required foreigner registration and obtain the stamped evidence.
Use the actual occupied address and repeat the process after moving; GBAO access is separate from general registration.
Verify the labour permit and employer
Do not start local employment until the M visa and foreign-labour approval are active. Keep the contract, permit and registration evidence.
Confirm before changing role, employer or region, since the sponsor and permission may be specific.
Check utilities and medical evacuation
Use a written lease and verify winter heating, power, water and landlord authority.
Medical capacity outside Dushanbe is limited; arrange private and evacuation cover and identify providers before moving dependants.
Set up tax, school and banking
Obtain the tax identifier and payroll registration required by the Tax Committee; keep travel and foreign-income records.
Each dependant needs valid stay and registration. Bring translated civil and school records; banks require documented identity, address and source of funds.
Renew and monitor border risk
Calendar visa, labour permit, registration and passport. Start sponsor-led renewal early and update address or employment changes.
FCDO advice identifies sensitive border and GBAO risks. Recheck permits and roads before travel and confirm driving-licence recognition.
Your moving checklist
Tick off the tasks that apply to you. The timing is a planning order, not a substitute for the deadlines on your permission or an official instruction.
