Moving to Tanzania: a practical relocation guide

Mainland Tanzania normally requires the labour work permit and the matching Immigration residence class for employment or investment. Zanzibar has its own practical authorities and should not be assumed to follow every mainland filing step.

Choose the legal route before the travel route

A mainland employee generally needs the appropriate labour work permit and Class B residence permit. Class A covers qualifying investors or self-employed activity; Class C covers defined non-employment purposes. A business or visitor visa does not replace these approvals.

Confirm whether the move is to mainland Tanzania or Zanzibar. Do not assume that an approval, business registration or licence issued by one authority completes every work and residence step in the other jurisdiction.

Coordinate employer, labour and immigration filings

Put the job title, profession, employer entity and workplace into one document checklist. Keep certified qualifications, contract, employer registration, passport and photographs, and identify which approval must issue first.

After arrival, inspect the residence endorsement or card and retain the work permit. Register or update the address and identity records requested locally; keep proof of each filing rather than only the agent’s receipt.

Choose housing for the city and season

Dar es Salaam congestion, Dodoma administration, Arusha regional travel and island life create different housing decisions. Inspect drainage, water, power backup, access and security and clarify rent currency, withholding obligations and termination.

Keep an evidenced address and a transport alternative while residence and driving formalities are pending. For field roles, document medical evacuation and employer travel policies.

Establish TRA, payroll and banking records

Ask the bank for its current residence, work, address, employer and tax-number requirements. Investors should separate personal funds from the licensed business and retain capital-import and source-of-funds evidence.

Tax residence, payroll and business obligations depend on the facts and the relevant Tanzanian jurisdiction. Track days, payslips, benefits, foreign income and invoices and confirm filing with TRA or a qualified adviser.

Do not bundle family, school and health into the worker file

Each family member needs their own dependant or other residence basis. A spouse should verify separate work permission before accepting employment, and children need civil, vaccination and prior-school records.

Confirm insurance networks and emergency options near the chosen address. School location can dominate the Dar es Salaam commute, so secure the seat before the long lease where possible.

Renew both authorities and check regional routes

Track the work permit, residence permit, passport and dependant documents separately. Employer, occupation or business changes should be approved before the new activity begins.

Review official advice for border areas, ferries and regional road travel. Before exit, reconcile TRA, payroll, lease and permit records and keep cancellation or renewal evidence.
