Moving to Tonga: employment, documents and island logistics
For a foreign national moving to Tonga for work, the practical starting point is the employer and labour-supported immigration application. Plan healthcare and island transport at the same time: a visitor entry and a flight booking do not complete a relocation.

Resolve work permission before committing
The Tongan embassy’s employment guidance covers foreign paid work and also voluntary or charitable work, subject to special arrangements for some approved international organisations. Ask the employer or host to establish the correct immigration basis before you treat an unpaid placement as exempt.
The published employment process needs labour-ministry support and an immigration decision. Business operation, study and residence without employment use different applications. The VisaAtlas visitor routes are not substitutes for the employment permission described by the government.
Coordinate documents with the filing mission
The embassy checklist calls for medical and police evidence, references and labour support. Longer employment applications also involve a job offer, qualifications and a contract addressing repatriation. Use the mission or Immigration office handling your case to confirm the current forms, validity windows and payment method.
Prepare authenticated translations where required and carry originals with copies. The cited embassy page includes Beijing-specific submission and payment instructions: do not assume those apply to an applicant filing elsewhere. Professional registration, where required for the job, remains separate from immigration.
Choose an island and home around the job
Settle the work location before signing a lease. A role on Tongatapu and one requiring inter-island travel produce different housing, transport and emergency arrangements. Ask the employer to document who pays for domestic travel, temporary accommodation and interruptions.
Visit or independently inspect the home, test the phone signal, and ask about water, electricity, repairs, storm preparation and the deposit. FCDO notes patchier mobile coverage outside towns and the need to register a local SIM with identity evidence. These practical checks matter more than relying on a national average rental figure.
Make healthcare access a moving decision
Official travel advice describes basic medical facilities and limited medicine and equipment availability. Non-basic treatment may require evacuation. Confirm the care needed by every household member before choosing the final location.
Buy cover appropriate to residence, employment and medical evacuation, with written confirmation about existing conditions. Keep funds accessible and arrange a supply and prescription record with your clinician. An immigration medical examination does not provide treatment cover after arrival.
Organise payroll and banking before shipment
Ask the employer how salary, withholding, accommodation benefits and tax records will be handled. Tonga’s revenue service has separate individual-employee and tax-identification processes; establish which records you and payroll must supply rather than assuming an employment visa registers everything.
Request a bank’s current newcomer checklist and transfer costs before sending a deposit or all savings. Keep a separate emergency reserve for travel and healthcare. For overseas income or a business, obtain advice that considers both Tonga and the country you are leaving.
Confirm family services rather than assuming access
Ask Immigration which application includes accompanying family and whether another adult needs their own employment permission. Obtain school or childcare confirmation directly, with the child’s prior records and support needs, before relying on an employer’s broad family-benefits promise.
For driving, check your licence and resident status with the local licensing authority and insurer before buying a vehicle. Ask the carrier and destination authority for current pet and goods import conditions before shipping. Leave time for island delivery and hold essential documents and medicines in personal luggage.
Plan the end of the assignment at the start
Keep the actual visa expiry and employment end date together with renewal evidence. The embassy’s renewal guidance calls for revenue support concerning tax-payment history. Preserve payroll records from the first month rather than reconstructing them at renewal.
An employer transfer is an application, not an automatic portability right. Before changing jobs, confirm approval and the updated conditions. Agree repatriation responsibility in the contract and a realistic exit budget if the assignment ends early.
Your moving checklist
Tick off the tasks that apply to you. The timing is a planning order, not a substitute for the deadlines on your permission or an official instruction.
