Moving to Turkmenistan: a controlled-entry relocation guide

Turkmenistan is tightly controlled. A State Migration Service invitation and visa do not by themselves authorise work or long-term residence; foreign employment and residence permits are separate approvals and movement can be restricted.

Obtain every approval before travel

The State Migration Service publishes separate services for visa and invitation, foreign-citizen work permit and residence permit. The inviting state body, company or family basis must support the correct chain.

Do not use a tourist or business invitation as a proxy for local employment. Approval is discretionary and ordinary open-market settlement should not be assumed.

Register through the host

The inviting organisation, hotel or host should complete migration registration and any itinerary approvals. Obtain proof and carry it with the passport.

Report an address, passport or itinerary change through the sponsor; travel outside approved areas can be restricted.

Do not work outside the permit

Wait for the foreign-citizen work permit and correct immigration status. Keep the approved employer, role and location in the contract.

A new employer or site needs official confirmation before work or relocation.

Keep commitments reversible

Use sponsor-approved housing and written terms. Avoid large irreversible deposits before residence and registration are confirmed.

Medical capacity and evacuation options are limited. Arrange insurance that explicitly covers Turkmenistan and identify departure routes.

Confirm tax and family arrangements

Ask the employer and State Tax Service about payroll and tax registration; sanctions or payment controls may affect banking.

Each dependant needs invitation, visa, registration and residence authority. Confirm school placement and translation requirements before travel.

Renew early and retain an exit plan

Start invitation, visa, work permit and residence renewals through the sponsor well before expiry. Do not assume a pending filing preserves travel or work rights.

Monitor current travel advice, border openings and internal movement restrictions and keep departure funds accessible.
