Moving to Tuvalu: residence, work and a practical island plan

For a move to Tuvalu, use a Permit to Enter and Reside for the actual purpose rather than a visitor allowance. Make the employer, accommodation, household healthcare and transport arrangements concrete before a long-term commitment.

Obtain permission for the purpose of the move

Tuvalu’s Immigration Regulations distinguish visitor permission from a Permit to Enter and Reside. Employment applications require employer sponsorship; business applications require business and financial evidence. Study, family and other recognised purposes have separate branches.

Use the current Immigration instructions for filing, documents and payment. Do not confuse Australian or New Zealand pathways for Tuvalu citizens with permission for a foreign citizen to settle in Tuvalu. Each country’s immigration decision is separate.

Build the sponsor and family file together

Prepare identity, support and purpose evidence, with medical and police records where required for the intended stay. Check translations and the exact accepted forms before paying for tests. Ask who covers repatriation and the first weeks of accommodation.

Each adult needs status or an endorsement expressly authorising employment before taking a job; do not assume dependant residence includes work. Keep relationship and custody records and ask for school-place confirmation. The principal job’s duration is not a guarantee that every household service will be available.

Choose the island around services and supplies

Establish whether the placement is on Funafuti or an outer island. Ask how people, documents and supplies move to and from the location, including when a planned sailing or flight is cancelled. Check the housing offer before shipping belongings.

Inspect water storage, electricity, ventilation, communications and repair responsibilities. Record rent, deposit, inventory and early-exit terms in writing. Add weather disruption and temporary accommodation to the personal budget rather than relying on a universal cost-of-living figure.

Make the medical transfer plan explicit

FCDO identifies the hospital on Funafuti and nurse-led services on the outer islands. More serious or complicated conditions can require evacuation to Fiji or Australia. Confirm the transport, receiving-country entry and payment arrangements before departure.

Discuss ongoing treatment and medicines with a clinician and ask where routine care can actually be obtained. Keep medical records and emergency contacts accessible. Insurance should cover the intended residence and work, not merely a short holiday.

Check today’s banking and phone service

Confirm current ATM, card and transfer arrangements directly with the National Bank of Tuvalu and your employer; do not assume that a service available to local account holders accepts your foreign card. Keep a secure Australian-dollar cash contingency for immediate costs and interruptions.

Ask payroll for the applicable tax and contribution records, salary date and deductions. Test local mobile service on arrival rather than relying on international roaming. Retain income and travel-day records for tax advice in Tuvalu and the previous country.

Treat a job change as an immigration event

The regulations allow cancellation when the approved employment or business ends or changes. Obtain direction before switching activity or employer. Extensions have their own conditions and limits; residence should not be assumed indefinitely renewable.

Calendar passports, principal and dependant permission, insurance and return travel separately. Keep application receipts and sponsor correspondence. Review the household plan before renewal, including school continuity, medical needs and a lawful onward destination.
