Moving to the UAE: sponsorship, work and family setup

A residence visa, work permit and professional licence are distinct. Golden residence is renewable long-term status, not citizenship.

Choose sponsor and emirate

The standard employment visa is employer-led; Green and Golden routes have different self-sponsorship evidence. Confirm ICP or Dubai GDRFA jurisdiction, entry permission and residence steps before travel. Tourist status does not authorise work.

Adults completing residence commonly need medical fitness and Emirates ID steps. Keep the employer contract, application reference and insurance evidence.

Build separate family and health files

Family permits remain linked to the sponsor and require current relationship, housing and other evidence. A spouse on a dependant residence does not acquire unrestricted work permission; confirm the employer’s work-permit process.

Insurance responsibility varies by emirate and relationship: UAE guidance distinguishes employer employee cover from sponsor responsibility for dependants. Verify the network and exclusions before arrival.

Make the move operational

Verify tenancy registration, payment schedule and authority before transferring money. Ask banks for identity, residence, tax-residency and source-of-funds requirements. Keep renewal and cancellation dates for every family member.

Golden residence allows longer renewable residence under category rules but is not automatic permanent residence or nationality.

Audit the offer and work authorisation

The UAE Government states that the employer applies for the standard work residence route and that work on a visit or tourist visa is prohibited. Reconcile employer legal name, workplace, occupation, salary, benefits and probation across the offer, employment contract and permit process.

Ask who books medical fitness, Emirates ID and insurance steps. A family-sponsored or Golden residence document still does not replace a work permit or professional licence required for the activity.

Prepare family, housing and healthcare evidence

The family-residence process ties dependants to the sponsor and asks for relationship, income, housing and medical-fitness evidence. Confirm the current list with ICP or Dubai GDRFA; a spouse’s residence does not itself confer unrestricted work rights.

Insurance responsibility varies by emirate and relationship. UAE guidance distinguishes employer cover for employees from sponsor responsibility for dependants. Check network, medicines, maternity, exclusions and start date rather than treating an insurance card as complete protection.

Plan banking, renewal and departure from day one

Ask banks for current passport, Emirates ID, residence, address, employment and source-of-funds evidence. Verify owner or licensed agent, payment instrument, tenancy registration, utilities and inventory before transferring housing funds.

Calendar the sponsor’s and each dependant’s expiry. Family permission can be affected when sponsor permission ends. Golden residence can reduce sponsor dependence for eligible categories but remains renewable residence, not guaranteed citizenship.
