Analysis

Germany's Freiberufler visa (§21(5) AufenthG) targets recognised liberal professions — writers, artists, consultants, scientists, certain teachers. The Berlin Finanzamt is the default Freiberufler-friendly jurisdiction; other cities apply the Freiberuf recognition test more strictly.

DAFT (Netherlands, US nationals only) serves freelancers well: €4,500 capital, KvK registration as eenmanszaak or BV, and an unrestricted path to the same business activities as local entrepreneurs.

Portugal's D2 Entrepreneur visa does not specify a capital threshold for self-employed applicants but requires evidence of a viable business plan and proof of means. D2 plus NIF registration is the standard freelance structure.

UAE freelance permits (issued via free zones or the Ministry of Human Resources) are among the fastest-processing options globally. They combine freelance authorisation with the Green Visa pathway for 5-year residence.

Frequently asked questions

Which country is best for a freelance visa?+−

Germany for liberal professions (writers, consultants, artists) — a strong tax framework and Freiberuf status simplifies social contributions. Netherlands DAFT for US nationals — lowest capital. Portugal D2 for broad scope and Schengen access. UAE for zero-tax.

Do freelance visas permit hiring employees?+−

Germany Freiberufler typically does not — the Freiberuf status is personal. DAFT via eenmanszaak does not; via BV yes. Portugal D2 does. UAE freelance permits are structured as individual-trader only; employing staff requires a full business licence.

Can freelance visas lead to permanent residence?+−

Germany Freiberufler converts to Niederlassungserlaubnis after 5 years. DAFT leads to permanent residence after 5 years. Portugal D2 leads to permanent residence after 5 years and citizenship after 5 years. UAE freelance permits do not lead to PR but convert to Golden Visa on reaching thresholds.
