Visa overview

The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) is a residence visa with three pathways: Points-based, Skilled Work Experience, and Trades and Technician. The Points-based pathway requires 6 points from one skill category (qualification, income, or eligible New Zealand occupational registration), with up to 3 additional points available from qualifying skilled work experience in New Zealand. The other pathways use their own occupation, qualification, pay, and work-experience requirements. Principal applicants need a skilled job or job offer with an accredited employer, must be 55 or younger, and must meet English, health, and character requirements. There is no fee to submit an expression of interest; the resident visa application costs from NZD 6,450. INZ's resident-visa wait-times page, checked on 10 September 2026, reports a 9.5-week average for SMC applications and says 80% are completed within 4 months; it is updated weekly. The visa lets successful applicants live, work, and study indefinitely, and a Permanent Resident Visa may be available later if its requirements are met. Applications made on or after 24 August 2026 in response to an invitation issued before that date are assessed under the instructions in force on 23 August 2026.

Application pathway

  1. Check your skilled job or job offer

Confirm employer accreditation, job duties, hours, contract duration and the pay rules for your chosen pathway. A job title alone does not establish eligibility.

  2. Choose an SMC pathway and prepare evidence

Check the pathway-specific occupation, pay, qualification, registration, and work-experience requirements. If an International Qualification Assessment is required, include its reference number in the EOI.

  3. Submit Expression of Interest (EOI)

Submit an EOI through INZ's online system. There is no fee to submit the EOI.

  4. Receive Invitation to Apply (ITA)

INZ tells you immediately whether your submitted EOI meets the invitation criteria. If invited, use the pathway named in the ITA. An application made on or after 24 August 2026 in response to an ITA issued before that date is assessed under the instructions in force on 23 August 2026.

  5. Lodge full residence application

Submit the full application with supporting documents within 4 months of invitation.

  6. Residence visa granted

On approval, you receive a resident visa that lets you live, work, and study in New Zealand indefinitely. You may later apply for a Permanent Resident Visa if you meet its separate requirements.

Plan the practical side of your stay

How many points do I need for the Skilled Migrant Category?+

The Points-based pathway requires 6 points. You can claim points from one skill category — qualification, income, or eligible New Zealand occupational registration — and may add 1 to 3 points from skilled work experience in New Zealand if needed. You cannot combine qualification, income, and registration points with one another.

How are Skilled Migrant Category points calculated?+

Examples from the current points table: a recognised doctorate gives 6 points; a New Zealand master's with the required bachelor's evidence and at least 30 weeks of full-time New Zealand study gives 6; a New Zealand bachelor's gives 5; an overseas bachelor's recognised at level 7 gives 4. Other master's and level-8 qualifications have specific conditions. Income gives 3, 4 or 6 points at 1.5, 2 or 3 times the applicable wage threshold. Use only one skill category, then add eligible New Zealand work experience to reach 6 in total.

Is there a Skilled Migrant Category occupation list?+

The Points-based pathway does not use a single general occupation list. All SMC applications still require the job to be assessed against the applicable occupation and skill-level rules.

What are the requirements for the SMC resident visa?+

Residence is granted indefinitely, subject to the visa conditions.

Do I need a job in New Zealand to apply for the SMC?+

Yes: you need qualifying skilled employment or a job offer from an accredited employer. You do not necessarily need to hold an AEWV first. Whether you must already have New Zealand work experience depends on your pathway, points claim and employment arrangement; income points can be based on an eligible job offer.
