Moving to Australia: a practical visa-to-settlement guide

Start with lawful status and work conditions, then plan money, housing, health, tax, banking, transport and family administration as separate tasks.

Choose the status before booking the move

Australia does not have one general relocation permit. A skilled, employer-sponsored, family, student, visitor or working-holiday route can create different work, study, family and Medicare outcomes. Check the visa conditions in VEVO or the grant notice rather than assuming that an entry visa permits local work.

Use VisaAtlas route pages to compare the intended visa with its processing and family conditions. A job offer, nomination, skills assessment or state requirement may be a pre-application step rather than something solved after arrival.

Budget for the first address and first pay cycle

Build a cash plan around temporary accommodation, bond and rent, transport, food, utilities, insurance, school or childcare costs and the period before the first salary. Exact rents and utility prices vary by suburb and state, so obtain current quotes rather than copying a national median.

A lease usually requires identity and evidence of income or savings. Ask what documents the agent accepts, keep a written condition report, and do not transfer a bond outside the regulated process for the relevant state or territory.

  • Keep an emergency reserve separate from visa funds.
  • Confirm whether the visa allows the work you have accepted.
  • Compare suburbs by commute, school access, transport and flood or bushfire information.

Health, tax, banking and work administration

Medicare access depends on citizenship, permanent residence, visa class and reciprocal arrangements; it is not automatic for every temporary migrant. Check Services Australia eligibility and arrange private cover where required.

The Australian Taxation Office distinguishes immigration status from tax residence. Register with your employer, keep payment summaries and ask the ATO about residency, foreign income, superannuation and tax-file-number steps for your circumstances.

Open a bank account with a regulated provider and protect identity documents. Before starting work, confirm the employer, occupation, location and conditions match your visa and keep copies of the contract.

Driving, children, pets and utilities

Driver-licence conversion is state or territory based. Check the local road authority before relying on an overseas licence; rules can differ by licence country, visa status and residence date.

For children, check school enrolment, immunisation evidence, custody documents and whether the child is included in or separately covered by the family visa. Pets need import eligibility, permits and veterinary preparation before travel; start with the Department of Agriculture requirements.

At the new address, arrange electricity, gas, water where applicable, internet and waste services. Ask the landlord which services are included and record meter readings.

A safer order of operations

A sensible order is: confirm visa and work rights; gather identity and family documents; plan arrival funds and temporary housing; arrange health cover; obtain tax and employment identifiers; secure a longer-term address; then complete state licensing, school, pet and utility tasks.

This order prevents a common mistake: treating a cheap flight or rental as proof that immigration permission is settled. Keep every deadline tied to an official authority and your own visa grant conditions.

Your moving checklist

Tick off the tasks that apply to you. The timing is a planning order, not a substitute for the deadlines on your permission or an official instruction.
