Moving to Barbados: permission and practical setup

Barbados separates local employment permission from the Welcome Stamp and longer residence statuses. Match the status to the actual activity, preserve entry and address evidence, and budget for healthcare and island logistics before cancelling overseas cover.

Match permission to the activity

A non-national who will work for a Barbados employer must register with Immigration before employment; the sponsor applies for the work permit. The Welcome Stamp is a remote-work status for overseas work, not a substitute for a local work permit.

Immigrant Status and the Special Entry and Reside Permit are distinct longer-stay routes with their own evidence. Property ownership, company registration or a visitor admission does not by itself authorise residence or local work.

Prepare the correct evidence set

Work-permit applications distinguish short-term from long-term employment and can require the employer’s case, qualifications, character references, medical evidence and business documents. Civil records for partners and children must be consistent with the principal applicant’s file.

Complete the online immigration and customs arrival form when the official window opens and retain its receipt. Keep passports, permissions, return or onward evidence where relevant and the intended Barbados address available at the border.

Choose a home that works in practice

Test commuting, water storage, ventilation, storm exposure, internet, generator arrangements and responsibility for garden or pool maintenance. Verify the owner or authorised agent, inventory, deposit, utilities and termination terms before payment.

Keep the signed lease and receipts as address evidence. Ask each bank, insurer and school what proof it accepts. If buying, use independent legal and title checks; ownership is a housing decision, not an immigration permission.

Build tax, social security and banking files

Immigration status does not settle Barbados tax residence or the treatment of foreign income. Record presence, work location, employer, overseas income and accounts; register with the Barbados Revenue Authority when required and obtain advice before restructuring remote work or a company.

Confirm National Insurance onboarding for local employment rather than assuming a permit completes it. Banks will request their own identity, status, address, tax and source-of-funds evidence, so keep another payment route until the local account is operating.

Protect healthcare continuity

Confirm what public services, employer benefits or private insurance are available to the household’s actual status. A work permit or Welcome Stamp should not be treated as proof of comprehensive, active healthcare cover.

Bring vaccination, prescription and clinical summaries; identify a local clinic, pharmacy and emergency facility. Check insurer networks, overseas evacuation terms and cover for each dependant before ending travel insurance.

Coordinate school and dependant status

Apply for each dependant’s immigration position rather than assuming the principal’s approval covers the household. A partner who intends to work locally must confirm their own permission.

Contact the intended school about age placement, address, identity, vaccination and prior academic records before choosing a long lease. For a child travelling without both parents, carry the notarised consent and guardianship material described by Immigration.

Recheck driving and pet rules before travel

Barbados abolished the former visitor driving permit from 15 October 2025, but a resident still needs to confirm what licence or local process applies to their status and vehicle. Use the Licensing Authority’s current instructions rather than older pages that still describe the old permit.

Obtain the agriculture authority’s pet import approval and veterinary requirements before booking. Keep the carrier, customs and arrival documents together, and diary immigration, passport, insurance and driving actions.
