Moving to Belarus: current feasibility and immigration limits
This is not a routine relocation destination. FCDO advises against all travel to Belarus because of arrest, detention, military-activity and limited-support risks. Visa-free admission and entry visas are not residence permission; confirm the complete work, residence and registration process before any essential move.

Start from the advice against all travel
FCDO advises against all travel to Belarus. The security situation is unpredictable, Belarus facilitates Russia's war against Ukraine and consular access can be restricted, especially for dual Belarusian nationals.
Postpone a voluntary move. If presence is essential, obtain independent legal advice, confirm an exit plan and assume travel insurance may be invalid when travelling against government advice.
Do not confuse entry permission with relocation status
Belarus publishes visa-free schemes, e-visas and purpose-specific entry visas. These are entry and short-stay mechanisms, not a complete right to reside or work. A British visa-free arrangement is stated to run through 31 December 2026 with limits, but it does not create employment permission.
Employment and permanent-residence entry visas are tied to an underlying approved purpose. Confirm the Ministry of Interior residence, registration and work approvals separately before travel.

Verify registration and border rules in real time
The MFA publishes post-entry registration guidance, but the responsible host, hotel or foreigner and deadline depend on the stay. Obtain proof rather than assuming a booking completes it.
Russia-Belarus travel changed on 11 January 2025 but is limited to authorised crossings and valid Belarusian or Russian visas. The Ukraine land border is closed to British nationals; do not improvise a land exit.
Avoid irreversible job and housing commitments
Do not begin work on an entry visa alone. Have the employer produce the work authorisation, residence basis, payroll and insurance instructions in writing and have counsel verify them.
Sanctions, payment restrictions and the risk of sudden departure affect leases and banking. Use cancellable housing and keep emergency funds accessible through lawful channels outside a single local account.
Plan for limited assistance
Healthcare, school and dependant status require local confirmation, but a family move materially multiplies evacuation and detention risk. Maintain medical and evacuation cover that expressly remains valid.
Belarus may treat a dual national only as Belarusian and may deny foreign consular access. Check military-service and child-document consequences before any family travel.
Keep documents and departure options live
Keep passport, visa, registration, employment and residence evidence ready for inspection and departure. Do not assume overstays or expiring status can be regularised after a border closes.
Monitor official advice daily and leave early if the security or exit position deteriorates. Avoid political activity and understand that conduct outside Belarus may be scrutinised.
