Moving to Botswana: a practical relocation guide

Botswana treats permission to work and permission to reside as separate records, and some visa-required nationals also need the correct employment entry visa. Obtain all applicable approvals before taking up the role.

Choose the legal route before the travel route

Botswana’s government describes a work permit as permission for a non-citizen to work for reward or invest for profit, while the residence permit lets a non-citizen live in the country. Plan both records and, if nationality requires it, the employment entry visa.

Investor evidence includes the operating premises, company and licence records; it is not a blanket exemption from trade or sector approvals. A dependant or ordinary residence endorsement should not be treated as authority to work.

File qualifications and regulator clearances early

The work-permit page lists the contract, offer, advert, CV, certified qualifications and passport, and identifies profession-specific clearances. Foreign-language certificates need the required English translation and qualification confirmation.

When approved, collect the work permit and complete the residence process. Check both expiry dates and the employer or investor basis; a successful application for one document does not prove that the other has issued.

Plan the actual Gaborone, Francistown or field posting

Inspect the lease, water arrangements, power, security, access roads and inventory. A field, tourism or mining posting can require different transport, medical evacuation and communications planning from Gaborone.

Keep the signed lease and actual address. Applicants over 18 may need a separate residence application even when financially dependent on the principal.

Keep payroll, banking and BURS records aligned

A bank sets its own passport, permit, address, employer and source-of-funds requirements. Keep transition funds accessible until the local account and salary payment work.

Record day counts, pay, benefits and foreign income and confirm Botswana filing and withholding with BURS. A temporary residence label is not a tax-residence conclusion.

Check family, school, healthcare and driving evidence

Residence applications for dependants use relationship and support records; students add admission and fee evidence. An accompanying adult needs independent work permission before employment.

Confirm healthcare and emergency transport near the intended location. Verify licence conversion or recognition with the transport authority and insurer rather than assuming a foreign licence remains valid for the whole permit.

Use Botswana’s early renewal window

The government work-permit page says renewals should be submitted six months before expiry. Preserve the renewed contract, employer compliance and copies of both work and residence permits.

Clear a new employer or investor activity before switching, review current travel advice for wildlife and border journeys, and retain tax, employment and cancellation evidence on departure.
