Choose residence by activity and nationality
Visitor entry does not authorise Brazilian employment or settlement. Employment residence depends on the authorised work basis; digital-nomad residence is for foreign-source remote work; family reunion depends on the qualifying relationship; and Mercosur nationals use a distinct agreement route. Check whether approval is obtained before entry or regularised in Brazil.
Do not use property ownership, a CPF or a Brazilian contract as substitutes for residence. Confirm each dependant’s status and work position separately. Preserve the official decision, consular visa where required and evidence supporting the exact category.
| Plan | Route | Dependency |
|---|---|---|
| Brazilian employment | Residence authorization for work (VITEM V) | Employer and authorised activity |
| Foreign remote work | Digital nomad residence (VITEM XIV) | Foreign income and insurance |
| Qualifying family | Family reunion residence (VITEM XI) | Civil and sponsor evidence |
| Mercosur nationality | MERCOSUR residence agreement (VITEM XIII) | Eligible nationality and identity records |
Prepare documents for two stages
Order passport, birth, marriage, police, qualification and custody records early. Determine which need apostille or legalisation and sworn Portuguese translation. Names, parentage and dates must match; resolve discrepancies before appointments.
Keep originals outside freight, plus scans, application receipts and entry evidence. A consular visa can still be followed by in-country registration. Check the Federal Police appointment and document list for the residence category rather than arriving with only the visa sticker.
Complete Federal Police registration and CPF
A temporary-visa holder must request migrant registration within 90 days of entering Brazil; someone granted residence in Brazil must request it within 30 days of the approval publication. Use the Federal Police service for the address where you live, attend biometrics and retain the protocol while the CRNM card is produced. RNM is the register number; CRNM is the physical resident identity document.
The CPF is a federal tax identifier, not residence permission. Receita accepts applications from Brazilian and foreign individuals, resident or non-resident; use the specific foreigner channel and be ready to provide photo identification plus civil evidence if the document does not show nationality, parentage and date of birth. Keep the CPF name aligned with the migration record.
Secure housing without breaking the evidence chain
Use temporary accommodation while comparing commute, security practices, flooding or heat exposure, internet, condominium charges and utility responsibility. Verify the owner or authorised agent and read guarantee, deposit, inventory, notice and adjustment clauses before payment.
Keep the signed Portuguese agreement, inspection report, payment receipts and meter readings. Ask which proof of address banks, Federal Police and service providers accept. Do not transfer a reservation payment solely from a messaging-app conversation; verify the property, counterparty and contract first.
Separate CPF, tax residence, payroll and banking
A CPF does not by itself make someone tax resident, and immigration residence does not settle tax treatment. Record arrival and travel dates, Brazilian and overseas income, assets and accounts. Employees should reconcile payroll and social contributions; remote workers and company owners should obtain advice before changing how foreign income is received.
Banks choose their own onboarding evidence and may request residence documentation, CPF, address, employment and source of funds. Keep an existing payment route while checks complete. Use the Central Bank’s institution information and never treat instant-payment access as proof that an account or intermediary is suitable.
Confirm SUS registration and interim care
Meu SUS Digital displays records linked through the Cartão Nacional de Saúde and CPF, including vaccinations recorded by national, primary-care and local systems. It is a record and access tool, not evidence that every local enrolment is complete. Ask the municipal primary-care unit how to create or reconcile the family’s records and correct duplicate or mismatched names.
Keep route-required or practical private cover until its end date and understand provider networks. Bring vaccination, prescription and clinical summaries in Portuguese where useful. Identify a local primary-care unit, pharmacy and emergency facility before medication runs low.
Set up work, school and dependants
Confirm that the employer can onboard the authorised migrant and that the role matches the residence decision. Regulated professions can require recognition or registration beyond immigration. Keep contract, payroll and contribution records for renewal.
Schools may ask for identity, residence, address, birth, vaccination and prior academic records; requirements and placement are handled locally. Contact the intended school before choosing a long lease. Check work rights for an accompanying partner and preserve proof of the family relationship.
Plan driving, imports, pets and renewal
A foreign licence, international permit and Brazilian CNH are different documents. State traffic authorities administer practical licensing, so check the rule for the issuing country and residence before driving or buying a vehicle. Vehicle import, registration, tax and insurance require separate research.
Pet entry requires agriculture-authority health documentation and carrier compliance. Inventory shipped goods and check customs treatment before dispatch. Diary passport and residence expiry, renewal-opening dates and address, employer or family changes that must be reported.
