Moving to Cameroon: permission, arrival and practical setup

Cameroon’s eVisa system distinguishes short and long stays, while residence and resident cards are separate in-country records. A long-stay visa or family card does not by itself authorise the proposed employment.

Separate entry, residence and work permission

Cameroon’s eVisa system distinguishes short and long stays, while residence and resident cards are separate in-country records. A long-stay visa or family card does not by itself authorise the proposed employment.

A visa waiver, visitor visa or business-visitor permission is not an open right to take employment or provide local services. Remote work also needs an immigration, labour and tax analysis unless the authority publishes a route that expressly covers it.

Complete the arrival record

Use the approved eVisa entry point and complete police, residence-card and labour steps with matching employer and address evidence. Retain the online authorisation and card receipt.

Inspect names, passport number, sponsor or purpose, permitted activity and expiry on every issued record. Keep the approval, receipt and a copy of the entry stamp outside the passport.

Make housing support the move

Yaoundé, Douala and regional postings differ in commute, rain, utilities and security. For the North-West, South-West or Far North, employer risk and evacuation planning must precede housing.

Verify landlord authority, lease language, deposit, inventory, utilities, internet and early-exit terms. Keep the real address and payment trail for immigration, banking and employer files.

Set up banking, payroll and tax evidence

Confirm payroll and tax registration and keep official bank and mobile-money records. The employer should explain salary, benefits and any security or remote-posting allowances in writing.

Ask the bank and tax authority for their live identity, permit, address, tax-number and source-of-funds requirements. Immigration status alone does not determine tax residence: retain travel days, payslips, foreign income and business invoices.

Plan each family member and essential service

Family members need their own cards, school and medical plans; adult work needs separate approval. Confirm referral and evacuation cover outside the main cities.

A dependant, student or family residence document should not be treated as an adult work permit without confirmation. Carry legalised civil records, prescriptions, vaccination records and prior-school reports.

Control renewal, changes and current risk

Track eVisa entry history, residence card, work authority and passport separately. Current official advice advises against travel to substantial regions, so check the exact workplace and road route.

FCDO advice current on 12 September 2026 advises against all travel or all but essential travel to specified parts of Cameroon. Treat the live regional map, insurance and evacuation capability as a go/no-go gate.
