Moving to Cayman Islands: permission and practical setup
The Cayman Islands use local immigration and employment controls. Secure the exact WORC status before work, verify every dependant, and make locally approved health insurance, housing and transport part of the offer test.

Use the live WORC route, not an old programme headline
A Cayman employer uses the work-permit system for approved employment. Residence certificates for independent means and permanent residence are separate categories with their own financial and property evidence; neither a home purchase nor visitor admission gives a general work right.
The Global Citizen Concierge Programme appears in the historical catalogue but is not a safe basis for a new move unless WORC confirms an active application channel. Use a current, open route and treat every spouse or child as a separate dependant decision.
| Plan | Catalogue route | Practical test |
|---|---|---|
| Cayman employment | Cayman Islands Work Permit (WORC) | Employer and approved occupation |
| Independent-means stay | Residency Certificate for Persons of Independent Means | Current WORC evidence and island |
| Permanent independent-means route | Certificate of Permanent Residence for Persons of Independent Means | Separate qualifying decision |
| Remote-work archive | Global Citizen Concierge Programme (GCCP) | Confirm programme is accepting cases |
Keep the permit and dependant file coherent
The employer should confirm which application, occupation, medical, police, qualification and advertisement evidence applies. Carry the approval letter, passport, entry evidence and dependant documents; do not begin work merely because the application is pending.
Changes of employer, job title or dependants can require a WORC amendment. On termination, the employer and worker must address cancellation and continued lawful stay rather than assuming unused permit time remains portable.
Activate approved local health insurance
Every resident must have at least the Standard Health Insurance Contract through an approved local insurer. Overseas cover can be additional but does not replace the local minimum. For employees, the employer is responsible for arranging cover, including specified resident dependants.
Obtain the insurer name, effective date and policy number; confirm every spouse and child is listed. Understand deductions, networks and evacuation limits. If employment ends, address replacement or continuation immediately because remaining in Cayman still requires local cover.
Price the island and verify the lease
Compare Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman based on worksite, school, medical access and transport rather than headline rent. Inspect hurricane resilience, insurance responsibilities, utilities, generator arrangements, inventory and notice terms.
Verify the landlord or agent and retain the lease, condition report, meter readings and payment trail. Ask WORC, the bank and school what address proof they accept. Do not send freight until customs has classified household goods and any vehicle.
Check payroll, pension and banking separately
Cayman does not make immigration permission a substitute for employment compliance. Ask the employer to show health-insurance and pension treatment. The pensions authority says non-Caymanian employees generally become pensionable after nine months, subject to the statutory framework and exceptions; check the current facts rather than assuming immediate or permanent exemption.
Banks set identity, immigration, address, tax-residence and source-of-funds requirements. Preserve an overseas account while onboarding and document transfers. Tax obligations in another country can continue even where Cayman does not levy personal income tax.
Coordinate family, schools and work rights
Confirm each dependant is named on an approved status and what happens at age or relationship changes. Dependant residence is not evidence of unrestricted employment; ask WORC what separate work authorisation is needed before a spouse accepts a role.
Schools have government and private admission processes. Confirm space, catchment or fees, immigration evidence, age placement, immunisation and prior-school records before signing housing around a preferred campus.
Use the resident driving window and pet permit
A new resident may use a valid foreign licence with vehicle insurance for a limited period of 12 months. Within that period, determine whether the licence qualifies for replacement or whether theory and practical steps apply; do not wait until the final month.
Dogs and cats require the Cayman agriculture import process and compliant veterinary evidence. Obtain approval before travel, then track work permit, dependant, health insurance, driving and pet-document dates together.
Your moving checklist
Tick off the tasks that apply to you. The timing is a planning order, not a substitute for the deadlines on your permission or an official instruction.
