Moving to Melbourne: visa-aware city planning

Melbourne decisions are local: compare the real commute, tenancy, transport, school, health and weather needs instead of relying on a city-wide cost promise.

Check the visa before choosing the job

Confirm that your Australian visa permits the work, employer, occupation and location you plan to use in Victoria. A Melbourne address does not broaden a visa condition.

If your route depends on nomination, a skills assessment or an employer, keep that evidence with the grant notice and ask Home Affairs before changing the plan.

Choose the suburb by commute and household needs

Compare the actual work or campus location, PTV route, school access, rental conditions, healthcare, climate exposure and support network. A longer commute can change the household budget more than a small rent difference, so test the weekday journey at the time you would travel.

Inspect a property before signing where possible. Consumer Affairs Victoria says the rental provider must give a condition report and bond transactions go through the Residential Tenancies Bond Authority; record defects, meter readings, inclusions, repairs, pet terms and who pays each utility.

Victoria administration

Use VicRoads’ overseas-licence checker for the exact licence country and residence situation; do not assume an overseas licence can be used indefinitely. Use PTV for the current network, fares and service information rather than relying on a generic city map.

Check Medicare eligibility or private cover, then keep tax and employment records for the ATO. Melbourne living does not create a separate immigration status. For children, ask the relevant school or childcare provider about enrolment evidence and immunisation records; for pets, begin federal import planning before travel.

Separate rent, bond and move-in cash

In Victoria, the rental bond is distinct from rent and is held through the Residential Tenancies Bond Authority (RTBA). Consumer Affairs Victoria explains the usual one-month bond limit and the exceptions, including higher-rent properties and VCAT orders. Check the rule for your agreement type rather than importing a deposit rule from Sydney or another state.

Before paying, confirm who manages the property, who is named on the agreement, which bills are included and how the bond is lodged. Keep the condition report and your own dated photographs. A furnished short stay can reduce immediate furniture purchases, but its weekly price may not be a sensible long-term housing budget.

Choose a neighbourhood by the journey you will actually make

A location that looks close on a map can still be awkward for an early hospital shift, an evening class or a school run. Use Transport Victoria’s timetable and disruption tools for the actual arrival and departure times. Compare the full door-to-door journey, including transfers and the walk from the stop.

Build a small shortlist and test it against your household rather than relying on a universal “best suburb” list. The table below is a decision worksheet, not a ranking of Melbourne neighbourhoods.

Do not leave the Victorian driving check until month six

VicRoads says people living in Victoria for more than six months must convert their overseas licence. The period runs from when you first start living in Victoria; leaving and returning does not restart it. Conversion requirements depend on the issuing jurisdiction, licence type, age and experience. Use the VicRoads checker early enough to arrange any appointment or test.

If you do not plan to drive, you can still compare housing without a car budget. If a suburban rental only works with a car, price the full commitment before signing: vehicle, insurance, registration, parking and running costs, not just the purchase price.

A workable Melbourne arrival plan

Before departure, confirm the visa conditions, book temporary accommodation and prepare the documents requested by employers and rental agents. In the first days, test the commute, inspect homes, arrange phone access and keep a record of any payments or applications.

Next, deal with the dependencies that affect your household: health cover, payroll and banking, a reliable address, utilities and school or childcare arrangements. Review the first month against your moving budget. Leave space in the calendar for inspections and appointments instead of assuming everything can be completed between landing and the first working day.
