Moving to Cuba: permission and practical setup

Cuba’s public consular system clearly supports visits and specified family, business and other purposes, but it does not offer a general digital-nomad or ordinary retirement residence path. Do not ship or give up another status until Cuban authorities confirm the exact long-stay basis in writing.

Treat route feasibility as the first decision

The A-2 visa is for qualifying family visits, business travel uses its own category and permanent residence is a distinct immigration process. Tourist entry or the D’Viajeros declaration is not residence or work permission. Confirm whether the intended paid or remote activity is lawful before relying on it.

Get written consular instructions before irreversible steps

Ask the responsible Cuban consulate for the exact visa, residence, work and family-document list. Confirm legalisation and Spanish translation of police and civil records, retain the D’Viajeros and entry evidence, and keep originals outside freight.

Plan housing and utilities around real availability

Only use a lawful accommodation arrangement and verify address registration expectations. Test power, water, connectivity, refrigeration and transport rather than assuming continuous service. Keep backup charging, safe water and a written inventory without breaching local import controls.

Design a compliant payment plan before travel

International cards and transfers can fail because of sanctions, correspondent-bank and Cuban banking constraints. Ask banks and your home-country sanctions authority what is lawful for your nationality and accounts. Do not depend on a single card or informal exchange arrangement.

Confirm healthcare, medicine and school access case by case

Cuba has a state health system but a foreign resident or visitor should not infer cost-free entitlement. Arrange insurance required for entry or stay, bring lawful prescription documentation and verify medicine availability. Ask Education and Immigration directly about school access for the child’s status.

Do not ship a car, pet or household before clearance

Confirm the licence rule with Cuban transport authorities and insurer before driving. Obtain Customs decisions for personal effects and Agriculture or veterinary permission for an animal before booking; carrier acceptance is not entry approval.
