Moving to Ethiopia: permission, arrival and practical setup

Separate entry, residence and work permission

Ethiopia publishes purpose-specific entry visas for investment, foreign-business employment, NGO work, study and residence. Use the category matching the sponsor; a tourist e-visa or visa on arrival does not authorise employment.

A visa waiver, visitor visa or business-visitor permission is not an open right to take employment or provide local services. Remote work also needs an immigration, labour and tax analysis unless the authority publishes a route that expressly covers it.

Complete the arrival record

Coordinate the employer or investment authority letter with Immigration before travel, then complete any residence identification and address steps in Addis Ababa. Regional assignments need a separate movement and communications plan.

Inspect names, passport number, sponsor or purpose, permitted activity and expiry on every issued record. Keep the approval, receipt and a copy of the entry stamp outside the passport.

Make housing support the move

In Addis Ababa, test water, power backup, internet, access and commute rather than choosing from rent alone. For work outside the capital, confirm road or air access and an employer evacuation plan before accepting accommodation.

Verify landlord authority, lease language, deposit, inventory, utilities, internet and early-exit terms. Keep the real address and payment trail for immigration, banking and employer files.

Set up banking, payroll and tax evidence

Ask payroll how local withholding, allowances and foreign-currency payments will be documented. Keep foreign-exchange receipts and do not assume a foreign salary removes Ethiopian tax or work-permit questions.

Ask the bank and tax authority for their live identity, permit, address, tax-number and source-of-funds requirements. Immigration status alone does not determine tax residence: retain travel days, payslips, foreign income and business invoices.

Plan each family member and essential service

Give dependants their own residence basis and check school places and medical referral access before the move. A family entry record does not create permission for the accompanying adult to work.

A dependant, student or family residence document should not be treated as an adult work permit without confirmation. Carry legalised civil records, prescriptions, vaccination records and prior-school reports.

Control renewal, changes and current risk

Keep the sponsor or investment approval valid alongside immigration status and clear employer or project changes before acting. Renew early because regional travel or office disruption can affect access.

FCDO advice current on 12 September 2026 advises against all travel or all but essential travel to many specified regions and borders. Check the live map for the exact assignment; a visa is not evidence that travel is safe or insured.
