Moving to France: validate status, enter the health system and establish your tax file
The first French action depends on the document issued: some long-stay visas require online validation, while other holders must follow a prefecture or residence-permit process. Do not copy another applicant’s post-arrival sequence.

Read the visa label before arrival
Use France-Visas to confirm the route, supporting documents and post-arrival instruction attached to the approval. A visa de long séjour valant titre de séjour normally requires online validation after arrival; a visa marked for a residence-card application follows a different prefecture process.
Carry civil-status records, housing evidence, work or study papers and the approval. Record the entry date and preserve travel evidence. Every partner and child needs a separate status plan; a family relationship does not make the principal applicant’s validation cover the household.
Complete the document-specific arrival action
Follow the exact France-Visas instruction and retain the validation or submission receipt. If a prefecture filing is required, use the official online or local channel for your department and book before the stated window closes. Do not wait for a landlord, bank or social-security number if the immigration deadline runs first.
Check the resulting document for work rights and renewal timing. A work contract does not override restrictions, and changing employer or purpose can require a new authorisation. Start the renewal evidence file well before expiry.
Open health and tax files on their own evidence
Service-Public explains that health coverage depends on nationality grouping and status such as employee, student, pensioner or job seeker. Use its questionnaire to identify whether employment, an S1, student cover or residence-based affiliation applies, then submit to the correct caisse. A temporary number or pending application is not the same as completed cover.
For tax, determine residence from the applicable rules and treaty rather than from visa length alone. The tax administration’s newcomer page explains first-declaration and contact steps. Keep foreign and French income, arrival date, household and account evidence, and ask the competent tax office how to make the first filing.
Build an address that works administratively
A landlord dossier may ask for identity, status and income evidence, but verify the owner or agent before transferring funds. Read the lease, inventory, deposit, guarantor arrangement, utilities and insurance obligations. Keep an attestation or bill showing your name and address for later services.
Banks apply identity, address, tax-residency and source-of-funds checks. Ask for the written list and compare account access rather than assuming a French phone number guarantees approval. Register employer payroll details carefully and inspect the first payslip.
Route each arrival question correctly
France has different portals for different legal acts.
| Situation | First action | Do not confuse it with |
|---|---|---|
| VLS-TS holder | Validate online as instructed | A prefecture residence-card filing |
| Visa requiring a card | Follow the prefecture/online permit process | VLS-TS validation |
| Employee | Confirm work right, health affiliation and payroll | A contract alone |
| Family applicant | Use the exact family route and individual documents | Informal dependency |
| Non-European driver | Test exchange eligibility and deadline on Service-Public | A universally valid one-year exchange right |
Protect the driving and family timelines
Service-Public says many non-European licences are usable for one year after normal residence begins only if the conditions and reciprocity rules are met; foreign students have a different rule. Check the issuing country, translation, validity and exchange eligibility immediately rather than near the anniversary.
For family, preserve translated civil records and create separate health, school and immigration tasks. Calendar permit renewal, tax declaration, lease notice and licence exchange. Report changes through the authority controlling that record; an address update to tax does not necessarily update immigration or health.
Your moving checklist
Tick off the tasks that apply to you. The timing is a planning order, not a substitute for the deadlines on your permission or an official instruction.
