Match status to activity
EU free movement still brings long-stay registration. Other nationals need a basis matching Greek employment, foreign remote work, investment, study or family life; Schengen visitor time and property ownership do not confer work rights.
The Blue Card is for qualifying Greek skilled employment, digital-nomad status for qualifying foreign activity, and investor residence remains policy-sensitive. Verify family work rights separately.
| Plan | Route | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Greek skilled job | EU Blue Card / highly qualified worker | Contract and qualifications |
| Foreign remote work | Digital Nomad Visa | Foreign activity and insurance |
| Investment | Golden Visa | Current rules and due diligence |
Build the evidence chain
Test heating, cooling, building charges, transport and internet. Verify the landlord and use a declared written lease; retain its exact address, inventory and payment evidence for residence, AFM, banking and schools. Budget deposits, translations, insurance, shipping and utilities from quotes.
Before moving from abroad, AADE provides an electronic TIN (AFM) and authentication-key application through myAADE, with identity and any required tax-representative authorisation. Save both the issued number and access credentials. Complete applicable social-insurance registration separately. Neither an AFM nor residence card proves healthcare access. Confirm insured, dependant, EU-coordinated or private cover and separately assess tax residence and overseas income.
Keep work permission and professional recognition separate
Confirm the approved employer, occupation and contract conditions before starting or changing work. The Blue Card is employer-based; digital-nomad status does not authorise Greek local employment.
Regulated professions may require recognition or licensing beyond immigration. Preserve contracts, qualifications, payroll records and any authority decision for renewal.
Prepare children and family records
Ask schools about catchment, placement, translated prior-school records, vaccination evidence and language support before fixing housing. Carry birth, relationship and custody documents with required authentication.
A dependant’s residence and work rights are distinct. Check each approval and avoid assuming that the main holder’s employment rights extend to a partner.
Sequence licences, vehicles, pets and renewal
Licence recognition and conversion depend on issuing country and residence; rental-car acceptance is not the legal test. Vehicle import, registration, tax and insurance are separate decisions, so price them before shipping.
Pets follow EU identification, vaccination and certificate rules plus carrier procedures. Record permit and passport expiry, renewal-opening dates and changes of employer, address or family circumstances that must be reported.
Use one consistent arrival file
Carry passports, approval and entry evidence, insurance, declared lease, work or remote-income documents, civil records and certified translations. Complete route-specific residence or biometric steps before assuming a receipt permits work.
Use identical transliterations and address details for AFM, social insurance, bank, utilities, payroll and schools. Keep another payment method during bank checks and save authority receipts for renewal.
Avoid common arrival dead ends
Keep certified translations, entry stamps, application receipts and lease evidence outside freight. Confirm whether an authorisation allows work now or only starts a residence process. Plan temporary payment and accommodation options while address, AFM and bank dependencies complete.
Reconcile the first payslip with the contract and insurance record. Log travel days and overseas accounts from arrival. Before changing municipality, employer or work model, check whether the residence file and declared address must be updated.
Maintain renewal and tax evidence
File lease payments, utilities, payroll or foreign-client income, insurance, contributions and travel dates monthly. Investors need continuing investment evidence, remote workers foreign-activity proof and employees the authorised contract.
Check passport validity before renewal and whether absences affect the plan. Tax filing, residence renewal and professional licensing use different authorities and calendars.
Make the first weeks operational
Identify the competent migration office, tax channel, social-insurance service, doctor, pharmacy and municipality for the actual address. Save appointment confirmations and note whether each accepts an original, certified translation or electronic record. If an appointment is delayed, ask the responsible authority how lawful stay and work are evidenced meanwhile.
Transfer utilities only against recorded meters and contract responsibility. Reconcile the first payslip with the contract, bank details and social record. Keep travel-day and overseas-account records from arrival, then review actual housing charges and deductions against the relocation budget.
