Moving to Jordan: a practical relocation guide
Jordanian employment normally requires both Ministry of Labour approval and Ministry of Interior residency. Five-year, investor, self-funded, family and study residence categories do not all confer the same work rights.

Choose residence and work rights separately
The Ministry of Interior publishes electronic residence services for work, family, study, investor and self-funded cases. Local employment also needs Ministry of Labour permission.
A five-year residence card or self-funded basis should not be treated as general work authorisation.
| Plan | Route to examine | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Local employment | Work Residency (Employer-Sponsored) | Labour permit and residency must align. |
| Self-funded stay | Self-Funded ("Workless") Residency with Bank Deposit | Confirm means and no-work boundary. |
| Family | Family / Follower Residency | Sponsor and relationship evidence; verify work separately. |
Complete Ministry of Interior and address steps
Follow the entry record and residence approval instructions, including security, medical or address steps stated in the case. Keep the application number and issued card.
Use a registered lease and ask the landlord for documents needed by the Ministry and utility providers.
Confirm the occupation and employer
Do not work before the Ministry of Labour permit and immigration residence permit allow it. Certain occupations can be restricted or closed to non-Jordanians.
A change of employer, occupation or governorate needs official review before the new role begins.
Register payroll and healthcare
Ask payroll to confirm Social Security Corporation and income-tax registration. Immigration residence and tax residence remain separate.
Confirm public or private medical coverage and provider network for dependants; maintain private and evacuation cover until active.
Set up dependants, school, banking and driving
Each dependant needs status, address and health cover. Bring Arabic translations or attestations requested for civil and school records.
Banks require identity, residence, tax and source-of-funds evidence. Check licence conversion and vehicle registration with the Public Security Directorate.
Renew around employer and passport
Calendar residence, labour permit, passport and dependant cards together. Start employer renewals early and report a move.
Monitor border and regional security advice before travel, especially toward Syria or Iraq.
Your moving checklist
