Moving to Liechtenstein: a practical relocation guide

Liechtenstein is in the EEA but does not offer unrestricted EEA residence: annual quotas and government allocation apply. For many workers, residence in neighbouring Switzerland or Austria with a commuter permission is the realistic comparison.

Treat residence as scarce and nationality-specific

Except for visits of up to three months, residence requires a permit. EEA residence is quota-controlled: at least 56 economically active and 16 non-active permits a year are allocated through government award and lottery. Swiss citizens have a separate smaller government-allocation branch; third-country residence is highly restricted.

Do not sign a local home on the assumption that an EEA passport guarantees registration. Compare employment residence, non-working residence and cross-border commuting before accepting the job.

Sequence the job and housing around the decision

An employer offer does not guarantee a B permit. Keep employment conditional where possible and do not commit to scarce long-term housing before the Migration and Passport Office confirms the route.

Cross-border commuting changes the immigration, health, tax and vehicle analysis because residence is in another country. Model the commute and obtain advice across both jurisdictions rather than using a Liechtenstein-only checklist.

Complete municipal and migration registration

After approval and arrival, follow the permit instructions and register the actual address with the municipality and Migration and Passport Office. Keep the lease, permit decision and civil documents available for every household member.

A later move, job change or departure can trigger notifications. Ask the Office before the change; a permit tied to employment or quota allocation should not be assumed portable.

Resolve insurance and cross-border tax

Liechtenstein requires compulsory health insurance for residents, while commuters may fall under cross-border coordination and election rules. Register each family member on the correct basis and retain other cover until the competent insurer confirms entitlement.

Tax treatment depends on residence, employment and applicable agreements with the neighbouring state. Keep workdays and travel days and obtain cross-border advice before choosing where payroll withholding settles the final liability.

Confirm the family entitlement and school place

Check the family branch attached to the awarded residence permission. Spouse eligibility, children’s age limits and documentary requirements depend on the EEA, Swiss or third-country rules; do not apply one branch’s age limit to every family.

Approach the municipality and school with address, identity, prior reports and language needs. If the household commutes from Austria or Switzerland, education and childcare normally follow the residence-country system.

Finish practical setup only after residence is clear

Banks apply identity, residence, tax-residence and source-of-funds checks. A local account neither creates a quota right nor substitutes for a commuter permit.

Driving and vehicle registration depend on residence and the licence's issuing state. Calendar the permit expiry and report employment or address changes early; settlement requires a separate qualifying history and application.
