Overview
Residence Permit B lets you both live and work in Liechtenstein, but the number granted each year is tiny and tightly capped under the EEA agreement. The catch is how they are allocated: about half of the EEA residence permits are awarded by a twice-yearly draw (a lottery), and the other half by direct government decision, decided by the Migration and Passport Office. You generally need a Liechtenstein job to qualify. Good to know: third-country (non-EEA) nationals are effectively excluded from the lottery and face far narrower, discretionary openings, so for most people who are not EEA nationals the realistic way to work in Liechtenstein is the cross-border commuter permit instead. Lawful B residence counts toward settlement (Permit C) after five years.

If you live in Austria or Switzerland and work in Liechtenstein, this is the realistic mass route - you work in Liechtenstein but return home, without using up a residence permit.
Settlement Permit C (Liechtenstein)
If you have lived in Liechtenstein on a Permit B for around five years, this is your settlement status - more secure, longer-term residence.
Family Reunification (Liechtenstein)
If a close family member holds a Liechtenstein residence permit or is a citizen, this route lets you join them - though the same tight quota system shapes the timing.
Frequently asked questions
How does the residence lottery work?+
Liechtenstein caps EEA residence permits very tightly and awards about half through a twice-yearly draw and half by direct government decision. You enter the draw and, if selected, can apply - so even with a job, getting to live there is not guaranteed. Confirm the current process on the official page.
Can a non-EEA national enter the draw?+
No - the residence draw is effectively limited to EEA nationals, so third-country nationals face only narrow, discretionary openings and usually rely on the cross-border commuter permit instead. Confirm the current rules on the official page.
