Moving to Moldova: a practical relocation guide

A Moldova move needs a recognised residence purpose and a usable address before the authorised stay runs down. Immigration control, employment, public services and the security situation in Transnistria must be planned as separate issues.

Match the residence ground to the real activity

Employment, study, family and investment or business cases use different provisional-residence services. A visitor stay does not authorise ordinary local employment. For work, coordinate the employer documents and residence application rather than treating them as consecutive afterthoughts.

The migration authority's worker checklist says documents must be submitted at least 30 days before the authorised stay ends. File earlier if civil records, criminal-record evidence or translations are needed.

Use a verifiable home and preserve arrival evidence

Ask the landlord for a written agreement that identifies the property, occupants and term and can support the residence file. Do not pay a long non-refundable deposit until the owner will provide the evidence requested by the General Inspectorate for Migration.

Keep the passport entry record, host or accommodation registration and immigration receipt. If the address changes, ask IGM or the territorial office what notification is required instead of assuming the lease updates the state record.

Link lawful work, payroll and tax identity

The worker-residence file includes an employment contract and employer-side material. Confirm the date on which work may lawfully begin and obtain written payroll and social-insurance registration evidence.

Tax residence is a separate analysis. Ask the State Tax Service for the identifier and registration that apply, track presence and disclose continuing foreign employment, property or business interests to a qualified adviser.

Verify medical insurance and family access

Application medical-insurance evidence does not by itself explain long-term entitlement. Employees should verify compulsory-insurance registration; dependants and non-workers should confirm whether they must insure themselves or maintain private cover before cancelling existing protection.

For children, take civil records, prior school reports and health information to the local education authority or school. Ask which documents need Romanian translation and who confirms grade placement.

Treat banking and driving as country-specific checks

Banks apply customer-identification, tax-residence and source-of-funds controls. Compare requirements for a newly arrived non-resident and ask whether a residence card or local address is mandatory before routing salary or rent.

Check the foreign-licence recognition or exchange branch with the Public Services Agency by issuing country. Vehicle import, registration and insurance are separate from the right to drive.

Keep Transnistria and renewal out of routine assumptions

The UK advises against all travel to Transnistria, which is outside Moldovan government control. Do not use an address or job there as if Chisinau-based registration, policing and consular help operate normally.

Calendar residence expiry and request the IGM extension checklist early. Reconfirm employer, address, insurance and passport evidence; an application receipt should not be assumed to preserve work rights unless IGM confirms it.
